By the late 17th and early 18th century, the Natchez ( pronounced " Nochi "), descendants of the Plaquemine culture, occupied the site, which they used for their major ceremonial center, replacing Emerald Mound.

Nearby Emerald Mound is also a National Historic Landmark.

Emerald Mound, the second largest Native American ceremonial mound in the United States is located just west of the Trace and north of Hiway 61 near Natchez.

The Plaquemine people built many platform mounds, including Emerald Mound, the second largest pre-Columbian structure in North America north of Mexico.
