In summer 1824, Patrick sent Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte and Emily to Crofton Hall in Crofton, West Yorkshire, and subsequently to the Clergy Daughter's School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire.

When his eldest daughters died of consumption in 1825, Maria on 6 May and Elizabeth on 15 June, Charlotte and Emily were immediately brought home.

In August 1824, Charlotte was sent with three of her sisters, Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth, to the Clergy Daughters ' School at Cowan Bridge in Lancashire.

It is said that during a visit to Alde House around 1860, one evening while sitting by the fireside, Elizabeth and Emily Davies selected careers for advancing the frontiers of women's rights ; Elizabeth was to open the medical profession to women, Emily the doors to a university education for women, while 13-year-old Millicent was allocated politics and votes for women.

After the death of their mother in 1821, when Emily was three years old, the older sisters Maria, Elizabeth and Charlotte were sent to the Clergy Daughters ' School at Cowan Bridge, where they encountered abuse and privations later described by Charlotte in Jane Eyre.

Emily was subsequently removed from the school along with Charlotte and Elizabeth.

They had two children, Lady Emily Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton ( 1828 – 1848 ), and ( Edward ) Robert Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton ( 1831 – 1891 ) who became Governor-General and Viceroy of British India ( 1876 – 1880 ).

In these cases, the position has been filled by a female relative or friend of the president, such as Martha Jefferson Randolph during Jefferson's presidency, Emily Donelson and Sarah Yorke Jackson during Jackson's, Mary Elizabeth ( Taylor ) Bliss during Taylor's, Mary Harrison McKee during Harrison's presidency, upon her mother's death, and Harriet Lane during Buchanan's.

She is known for her appearance in the film Emily and subsequent relationship with Prince Andrew, son of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, before his marriage to Sarah, Duchess of York.

Ann Emily married the Honorable Ross Cuthbert ; Richard Rush ( 1780 – 1859 ) became an attorney and married Catherine Elizabeth Murray ; Mary married Major Thomas Manners ; James became a medical doctor and married Eugenia Frances Heister and Elizabeth Upshur Dennis ; Benjamin did not marry, moved to New Orleans, LA ; Julia ( 1792 – 1860 ) married Henry Jonathon Williams Esquire ; Samuel ( 1795 – 1859 ) became an attorney and married Nancy Anne Wilmer ; William became a doctor and married Elizabeth Fox Roberts.

In 1842 Charlotte and Emily travelled to Brussels to enrol in a boarding school run by Constantin Heger ( 1809 – 96 ) and his wife Claire Zoé Parent Heger ( 1804 – 87 ).

In 1842, Emily accompanied Charlotte to Brussels, Belgium, where they attended a girls ' academy run by Constantin Heger.

Emily and Charlotte arrived in Brussels in February 1842 accompanied by their father.

Early in 1842 Wakefield had been joined in New Zealand by his daughter, Emily, then sixteen years old.

In 1842 he married Emily McLaughlin, who died in 1845.
