Khmer Krom or Southern Khmer is spoken by the indigenous Khmer population of the Mekong Delta, formerly controlled by the Khmer Empire but part of Vietnam since 1698.

The Funanese Empire rose to eminence from its affluent and powerful home city of Oc Eo ( in nowadays Vietnam ), known in the Roman Empire as Kattigara, meaning the Renowned City.

Amongst the last of these empires of the 20th century were the Central African Empire, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Manchukuo, the German Empire, and Korea.

During the Trần Dynasty, the armies of the Mongol Empire under Mongke Khan and Kublai Khan, the founder of the Yuan dynasty invaded Vietnam in 1257 AD, 1284 AD, and 1288 AD.

The West's exposure in Vietnam and Vietnam's exposure to Westerners dated back to 166 AD with the arrival of merchants from the Roman Empire, to 1292 with the visit of Marco Polo, and the early 16th century with the arrival of Portuguese in 1516 and other European traders and missionaries.

For the most part of its history, the geographical boundary of present day Vietnam covered 3 ethnically distinct nations: a Vietnamese nation, a Cham nation, and a part of the Khmer Empire.

In 166 CE the first Roman envoy ( s ) sent by " the king of Da Qin Roman Empire, Andun ( Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, r. 161-180 CE )", reached Luoyang after arriving by sea in Rinan Commandery in what is now central Vietnam.
