In 43, Emperor Guangwu agreed and created Liu Yang ( 劉陽 ), the oldest son of Empress Yin, crown prince instead.

After An's death, his wife, Empress Dowager Yan ( d. 126 CE ) placed the child Marquess of Beixiang on the throne in an attempt to retain power within her family.

Her first step was to install her maternal grandson Zhang Yan ( 張偃 ; Princess Yuan of Lu's son, Empress Zhang Yan's brother ) as the Prince of Lu.

Emperor Hui's wife was Empress Zhang Yan, a niece of his by his sister Princess Yuan of Lu ; their marriage was the result of insistence by Empress Dowager Lü and was a childless one.

She bribed Empress Xu's female physician Chunyu Yan ( 淳于衍 ), under guise of giving Empress Xu medicine after she gave birth, to poison her.

It warned that Dong might suffer the same fate of Emperor Wen's favorite Deng Tong ( 鄧通 ), who starved to death after his assets were confiscated by Emperor Wen's heir, or of Emperor Wu's favorite Han Yan ( 韓嫣 ), who was executed by Empress Dowager Wang after being accused of improperly assuming imperial style.

In 243, Cao Fang married Empress Zhen, a granddaughter of his grandmother Lady Zhen's brother Zhen Yan ( 甄儼 ).

However, Empress Jia and Jia Wu opposed this, and instead married a daughter of the official Wang Yan ( 王衍 ) to Crown Prince Yu.

He then carried out a plot to try to put Murong Chui to death -- as he bribed one of Murong Chui's guards Jin Xi ( 金熙 ) into giving Murong Chui's heir apparent Murong Ling ( 慕容令 ), who was serving as Wang's guide, a false message that Murong Chui had heard that Empress Dowager Kezuhun had regretted her actions and that, therefore, he was defecting back to Former Yan.

Shi Zun hesitated, and meanwhile, Shi Jian, one of the princes attending the meeting, quickly reported the news to Shi Min, who acted quickly and surrounded the palace, capturing and executing Shi Zun, Empress Dowager Zheng, Shi Zun's wife Empress Zhang, Shi Yan, and several key officials loyal to Shi Zun.

The coup participants also killed a number of high level officials and relatives of Emperor Yang, including Emperor Yang's brother Yang Xiu and his sons, son Yang Jian and his sons, grandson Yang Tan the Prince of Yan, Yu Shiji, Pei Yun, Lai Hu ' er, Yuan Chong ( 袁充 ), Yuwen Xie ( 宇文協 ), Yuwen Jiong ( 宇文皛 ), and Xiao Ju ( 蕭鉅 ) the Duke of Liang ( Empress Xiao's nephew ).

Xiao Yan entered the palace triumphantly, and, making Xiao Zhaoye's mother Empress Dowager Wang Baoming titular regent, he had himself made the supreme commander and the Duke of Jian ' an.
