The creation of a draugr is not exactly clear, but in the Eyrbyggja saga, a shepherd is killed by a draugr and rises the next night as one himself.

Among written sources which the author likely used are Laxdœla saga, Eyrbyggja saga and Ljósvetninga saga as well as the lost sagas Brjáns saga and Gauks saga Trandilssonar.

The other two relate to the saga literature ; the first is a retelling of Styrbjarnar þáttr Svíakappa ( alluded to in Eyrbyggja Saga and Heimskringla ), while the second is a direct translation from Egil's saga, supplemented with extensive notes, some which explain Eddison's aesthetic and philosophical outlook.

Eyrbyggja Saga details the transition of paganism to Christianity within Icelandic settlement under the direction of Snorri Goði, or “ Snorri the Priest .” The emphasis on justice and the conviction in their system of governance is reflected within the saga: “ They say we ’ ll suffer setbacks in court ; we must plead for support from powerful chieftains: but Arnkel will argue an eloquent case, he ’ ll sway judge and jury-I have faith in justice .” However, court decisions were often displaced by personal and violent acts of vengeance as a matter of duty and honor.

But the Eyrbyggja saga from the Icelandic Scandinavian influence tradition speak of human sacrifices in honor of the Scandinavian god Thor.

Gesta Danorum ( book 10 ), Styrbjarnar þáttr Svíakappa and Eyrbyggja saga relate that in the early 980s, the exiled Swedish prince Styrbjörn the Strong brought the Jomsvikings to a devastating defeat against Styrbjörn's uncle Eric the Victorious at the Battle of the Fýrisvellir, Uppsala, in 984 or 985, while trying to take the crown of Sweden by force of arms.

Thorolf of Eyrbyggja Saga was " uncorrupted, and with an ugly look about him ... swollen to the size of an ox ," and his body was so heavy that it could not be raised without levers.

In Eyrbyggja Saga the draugar infesting the home of the Icelander Kiartan were driven off by holding a " door-doom ".

In the Eyrbyggja Saga a shepherd is assaulted by a blue-black draugr.
