Although myths and speculation about a Terra Australis (" Southern Land ") date back to antiquity, the first confirmed sighting of the continent of Antarctica is commonly accepted to have occurred in 1820 by the Russian expedition of Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev on Vostok and Mirny.

Captain James Cook discovered the southern eight islands of the Sandwich Islands Group in 1775, although he lumped the southernmost three together, and their status as separate islands was not established until 1820 by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen.

* January 28 ( NS ) – History of Antarctica: An Imperial Russian Navy expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev sights the coast of Antarctica.

In 1820, several expeditions claimed to have been the first to have sighted Antarctica, with the very first being the Russian expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.

According to various sources, three men all sighted Antarctica within days or months of each other: Fabian von Bellingshausen, a captain in the Russian Imperial Navy ; Edward Bransfield, a captain in the British navy ; and Nathaniel Palmer, an American sealer out of Stonington, Connecticut.

It is certain that on 28 January 1820 ( New Style ), the expedition led by Fabian von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev on two ships reached a point within 20 miles ( 40 km ) of the Antarctic mainland and saw ice-fields there.

The lake is named after Vostok Station, which in turn is named after the Vostok ( Восток ), the 900 ton sloop-of-war sailed by one of the discoverers of Antarctica, Russian explorer Admiral Fabian von Bellingshausen.

It was fought on February 11, 1814, and resulted in the victory of the French under Emperor Napoleon I over the Russians under General Fabian Wilhelm von Osten-Sacken and the Prussians under General Ludwig Yorck von Wartenburg.

The pair had access to members of the Stauffenberg family as well as a book written by Fabian von Schlabrendorff-a conspirator who survived.

The island was first sighted by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen on 21 January 1821 and was named for Peter I of Russia.

He worked with Henning von Tresckow and Fabian von Schlabrendorff to reduce the atrocities committed, and often massaged the numbers reported to his superiors ( including one claim that his task force was responsible for more than 45, 000 killings ).

By the summer of 1939, he told Fabian von Schlabrendorff, his cousin by marriage, that " both duty and honor demand from us that we should do our best to bring about the downfall of Hitler and National-Socialism in order to save Germany and Europe from barbarism.

They included Lieutenant Colonel Georg Schulze-Büttger, Colonel Rudolf Christoph Freiherr von Gersdorff, Major Carl-Hans Graf von Hardenberg, Lieutenant Heinrich Graf von Lehndorff-Steinort, Lieutenant Fabian von Schlabrendorff, Lieutenant Philipp von Boeselager and his brother Georg von Boeselager, Lieutenant Colonel Hans-Alexander von Voss, and Lieutenant Colonel Berndt von Kleist, among others, many of them from Tresckow's old Infantry Regiment 9.

According to Bodyguard of Lies on March 13, 1943, Colonel Henning von Tresckow had his adjutant Fabian von Schlabrendorff place a time bomb aboard Hitler's plane on March 13, 1943, right after Stalingrad, but it failed to go off, despite their testing and re-testing the fuses.

The assassination attempt carried out by Fabian von Schlabrendorff failed.

* Bomb on Hitler's aircraft: On 13 March 1943, Colonel Henning von Tresckow and Lieutenant Fabian von Schlabrendorff planted a bomb on an aircraft that Hitler was to fly between his military headquarters in Rastenburg, East Prussia and Army Group Center Headquarters in Smolensk, USSR.

Lt. Fabian von Schlabrendorff who retrieved the bombs found that the bomb had remained as it was.

In Fabian von Schlabrendorff ’ s book Offiziere gegen Hitler he is mentioned only in the death-roll.

While his southern commander Greene in 1780 – 81 did use Fabian tactics, Washington did so only in fall 1776 to spring 1777, after losing New York City and seeing much of his army melt away.

In 1909 he had a daughter, Anna-Jane, with the writer Amber Reeves, whose parents, William and Maud Pember Reeves, he had met through the Fabian Society ; and in 1914, a son, Anthony West ( 1914 – 1987 ), by the novelist and feminist Rebecca West, twenty-six years his junior.
