In December 2008, Bernard Madoff was arrested for running a US $ 50 billion Ponzi scheme which was thought to be a hedge fund, and several feeder hedge funds, of which the largest was Fairfield Sentry, channelled money to it.

On May 18, 2008, Fairfield University conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Mr. Vincent where he served on the Board of Trustees from 1991 to 2002 ; and he created the need-based Alice Lynch Vincent Scholarship Fund in memory of his mother in December 1996.

In 1885 the yard moved further west to its present site and was reorganised as the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd.

The Company was formed in February 1968 from the amalgamation of five major Upper Clyde Shipbuilding firms: Fairfield in Govan ( Govan Division ), Alexander Stephen and Sons in Linthouse ( Linthouse Division ), Charles Connell and Company in Scotstoun ( Scotstoun Division ) and John Brown and Company at Clydebank ( Clydebank Division ), as well as an associate subsidiary, Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd, in which UCS held a controlling stake of 51 %.

In 1963, the Fairfield engine building division merged with another Lithgow subsidiary, David Rowan & Company, to form Fairfield Rowan Ltd.

Soon after the decade long shipyard modernisation works were completed, Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd and Fairfield Rowan Ltd were placed into receivership and was subsequently sold by Lithgow's in 1965.

The marine engine building subsidiary Fairfield Rowan was closed in 1966, but the modernised shipbuilding operation was reconstituted as Fairfield ( Glasgow ) Ltd, in what became known as the famous Fairfield Experiment, into new ways of improving productivity through new reforms to industrial relations and the application of scientific management methods to improve productivity.

The company was formed in 1972 by way of a purchase of the former Fairfield Shipyard in Govan from Sir Robert Smith, Liquidator of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders ( UCS ), itself a product of the amalgamation of several Clydeside yards ; Fairfields, Alex Stephens, Charles Connell and Company, Yarrow Shipbuilders Ltd. and John Browns.

Fairfield House is the present site of Link Holdings Ltd.
