In July 2011 Gheorghiu sang the title role in Tosca at the Royal Opera House conducted by Antonio Pappano, and the following September returned there for the revival of Faust, which was broadcast live in cinemas all over the world.

Faust comes to realize his newfound friend, Blue Devil, is only staying with him because of the magical nature of his revival.

On his return to Paris, the recently completed La damnation de Faust was premiered at the Opéra-Comique, but after two performances, the run was discontinued and the work was a popular failure ( perhaps owing to its halfway status between opera and cantata ), despite receiving generally favourable critical reviews.

In the second half of the 19th century, Jacques Offenbach created operetta with witty and cynical works such as Orphée aux enfers, as well as the opera Les Contes d ' Hoffmann ; Charles Gounod scored a massive success with Faust ; and Bizet composed Carmen, which, once audiences learned to accept its blend of Romanticism and realism, became the most popular of all opéra comiques.

A comic parody of Faust, it stars Cook as George Spigott ( The Devil ) who tempts Stanley Moon ( Moore ), a frustrated, short-order chef, with the promise of gaining his heart's desire – the unattainable beauty and waitress at his cafe, Margaret Spencer ( Eleanor Bron ) – in exchange for his soul, but repeatedly tricks him.

( French composer Charles Gounod was also a guest at this reception, and he and Edison discussed the prospect of recording a performance of Gounod's opera Faust, but a collaboration never materialized.
