The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service lists as endangered 99 animals, fish, and birds, and 18 plant species.

The island now forms the Baker Island National Wildlife Refuge and is an unincorporated and unorganized territory of the U. S. Its defense is the responsibility of the United States ; though uninhabited, it is visited annually by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Due to an affliction affecting bats in the northeastern US known as white nose syndrome ( WNS ), the US Fish & Wildlife Service has called for a moratorium effective March 26, 2009 on caving activity in states known to have hibernacula ( MD, NY, VT, NH, MA, CT, NJ, PA, VA, and WV ) affected by WNS, as well as adjoining states.

In Florida, the toad is a regarded as a threat to both native species and to pets, so much so, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recommends residents euthanize them.

The island is managed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an insular area under the U. S. Department of the Interior and is part of the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.

The Ozark hellbender has been listed as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Oct. 5, 2011.

However, the US Fish and Wildlife Service reported in the Federal Register on 7 September 1995 that this brine shrimp did not warrant listing after the threat to the lake was removed following a revised policy by the California State Water Resources Control Board.

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Province of Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources, however, consider the species already extinct, on the basis that no specimen has been collected since 1985.

In 2011, the State Legislature passed SB 5622, which created a $ 10 day-use permit and a $ 30 annual pass for vehicles to enter state parks and other recreational lands owned or managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

In 1949 the Tennessee Game and Fish Commission, now the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency ( TWRA ), established a tentative purchase boundary encompassing some 90, 000 acres ( 360 km² ) within which they began to eliminate interior holdings through a land acquisition program.

Along with Palmers Island, the city also lays claim to Fish Island and Pope's Island.

Two conventional bridges connect each of the islands to the nearest mainland, Fish Island to New Bedford and Pope's Island to Fairhaven.
