" Aggravatin ' Papa " was composed with lyricist Roy Turk and Addie Britt and was recorded by Alberta Hunter in 1923 with Fletcher Henderson's Dance Orchestra and also by Bessie Smith, Sophie Tucker, Florence Mills, Lucille Hegamin, and Pearl Bailey.

Bingham and Mills were convicted of murder and sent back to United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility Prison ( ADX ) in Florence, Colorado where they are serving life sentences with no parole, escaping the death penalty.

Three weeks later, the band moved on to a better booking at the De Luxe Café, where the entertainers included Florence Mills and Cora Green.

The better known of his lovers included cabaret singer Florence Mills, banking heiress Poppy Baring, socialite Margaret Whigham ( later Duchess of Argyll and involved in a notoriously scandalous divorce case ), Barbara Cartland ( who believed him to be the father of her daughter Raine McCorquodale ) and musical star Jessie Matthews.

Blackbirds of 1928 was the idea of impresario Lew Leslie, who planned to build the show around Florence Mills in New York after her success in the hit show Blackbirds in London in 1926, but she died of pneumonia in 1927 before rehearsals started.

The Blackbirds revues helped advance the career of several famous artists, including Florence Mills, Adelaide Hall, Tim Moore, Bill " Bojangles " Robinson Lottie Gee and Lena Horne.

Gertrude Saunders was replaced by Florence Mills.

Holmes was the daughter of Norwegian immigrant Louis A. Holmes ( born in Norway in October 1862 ), a railroad clerk employed by the Illinois Central Railroad, who had migrated to the United States in 1867, and his wife Sophia ( born April 1869 in Indiana ), and was the sister of Frank O.
