India is currently seeking a permanent seat in the UN Security Council, along with the G4 nations.

There are several proposed plans, notably by the G4 nations, by the Uniting for Consensus group, and by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

On September 21, 2004, the G4 nations ( Brazil, Germany, India and Japan ) issued a mutual declaration supporting each other's claim to permanent membership status on the U. N. Security Council.

Under the leadership of Italy, it aims to counter the bids for permanent seats proposed by G4 nations ( Brazil, Germany, India and Japan ) and is calling for a consensus before any decision is reached on the form and size of the Security Council.
