Jefferson's political actions, his support of Philip Freneau's National Gazette, and his attempt to undermine Hamilton, nearly led George Washington to dismiss Jefferson from his cabinet.

The execution of a number of Protestant preachers, most notably the Lutheran influenced Patrick Hamilton in 1528 and later the proto-Calvinist George Wishart in 1546 who was burnt at the stake in St. Andrews by Cardinal Beaton for heresy, did nothing to stem the growth of these ideas.

In the 1790s he fretted over an aging George Washington being too much influenced by close advisers such as Alexander Hamilton, who Monroe thought too close to Britain.

Hamilton learned from Machiavelli about the importance of foreign policy for domestic policy, but may have broken from him regarding how rapacious a republic needed to be in order to survive ( George Washington was probably less influenced by Machiavelli ).

Their agreed to formula was, “ Done in Convention, by the unanimous consent of the States present .” George Washington noted in his diary that night, the proposal was agreed to by eleven state delegations and the lone Mr. Hamilton for New York.

The party was formed by Alexander Hamilton, who, during George Washington's first term, built a network of supporters, largely urban bankers and businessmen, to support his fiscal policies.

The existence of the Cabinet dates back to the first President of the United States, George Washington, who appointed a Cabinet of four men: Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson ; Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton ; Secretary of War Henry Knox ; and Attorney General Edmund Randolph to advise him and to assist him in carrying out his duties.

In December 1893 an Opposition motion proposed by Lord George Hamilton called for an expansion of the Royal Navy.
