One very famous colonial officer in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony was Sir Arthur Grimble ( 1888 – 1956 ), at first as a cadet officer in 1914, under Edward Carlyon Eliot who was Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert & Ellice Islands colony from 1913 to 1920.

The great bulk of the non-G & S Savoy Operas either failed to achieve a foothold in the standard repertory, or have faded over the years, leaving the term " Savoy Opera " as practically synonymous with Gilbert and Sullivan.

During the years when the Gilbert and Sullivan (“ G & S ”) operas were being written, Richard D ' Oyly Carte produced operas by other composer – librettist teams, either as curtain raisers to the G & S pieces, or to fill the theatre when no G & S piece was available.

After A Princess of Kensington, Mrs. D ' Oyly Carte relinquished control of the theatre until December 8, 1906, when she produced two seasons of G & S revivals in repertory, with Gilbert returning to direct.

The film On Golden Pond was released in December of 1981, directed by Mark Rydell & produced by Bruce Gilbert with Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda in the starring cast.

In 1875, the new Havana, Rantoul and Eastern Railroad ( which became the Illinois Central Railroad ) crossed the C & EI north of Gilbert, and the town of Alvan was founded at the intersection.

The resulting Chapel was consecrated on St Matthew's Day, 1665, and the eastern end was extended by George Gilbert Scott in 1880, when it was consecrated on the Feast of the Annunciation.

Waterhouse was dismissed as architect in 1878 and succeeded by George Gilbert Scott, who, after extending the Chapel, provided additional accommodation with the construction of New Court in 1881, with letters on a series of shields along the string course above the first floor spelling out the Psalm text " Nisi Dominus aedificat domum …" (" Except the Lord build the house, their labour is but vain that build it ").

Inspired by the evangelical preaching of George Whitefield and others, Gilbert Tennent delivered a sermon in West Nottingham, Maryland in 1740 on " The Dangers of an Unconverted Ministry.

The college hall, originally built at the very start of the 16th century was restored in 1875-1879 by George Gilbert Scott, the younger.

* St. Nicholas ' Church, Hamburg, designed by English architect George Gilbert Scott, is completed.

In 1851 The Illustrated London News said that it " seems to exhibit the peculiar beauties of Carnarvon Castle without its inconveniences " and in 1858 Sir George Gilbert Scott called it " the largest and most carefully and learnedly executed Gothic mansion of the present " and that it was " the very height of masquerading ".

George Bernard Shaw wrote that Gilbert, who had earlier adapted Offenbach's Les brigands, drew on that work also for his new libretto.

These included the Chapel, designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, which includes in its interior some pieces saved from the original chapel.

The room was extended from five to eight bays according to designs by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1863.
