Elie Wiesel supported Kosinski ; Israel Gutman and Daniel Goldhagen ( see below ) supported Wilkomirski ; Wiesel and Gutman support Goldhagen.

Goldhagen reached international attention and broad criticism as the author of two controversial books about the Holocaust, Hitler's Willing Executioners ( 1996 ) and A Moral Reckoning ( 2002 ).

During the " Goldhagen Controversy " of 1996, Wehler was a leading critic of Daniel Goldhagen, especially in regards to the latter's claims in his book Hitler's Willing Executioners about an alleged culture of murderous German " eliminationist anti-Semitism ", though Wehler was more sympathetic towards Goldhagen's claims concerning the motives of Holocaust perpetrators.

Goldhagen argued that this " eliminationist antisemitism " was the cornerstone of German national identity, that this type of antisemitism was unique to Germany and because " eliminationist antisemitism ", ordinary Germans killed Jews willingly and happily.

Bauer has criticized the work of the American political scientist Daniel Goldhagen, who writes that the Holocaust was the result of the allegedly unique “ eliminationist ” antisemitic culture of the Germans.

Goldhagen said that “ Mayer ’ s enormous intellectual error ” is in ascribing the cause of the Holocaust to anti-Communism, rather than to anti-Semitism, and criticized Prof. Mayer ’ s saying that most massacres of Jews in the USSR, during the first weeks of Operation Barbarossa ( 1941 ) in the summer of 1941, were committed by local peoples, with little Wehrmacht participation, and accused him of traducing the facts about the Wannsee Conference ( 1942 ), which was meant for plotting the genocide of European Jews, not ( as Mayer said ) merely the resettlement of the Jews.

According to Goldhagen, his Holocaust studies address questions about the political, social, and cultural particulars behind other genocides: “ Who did the killing ?” “ What, despite temporal and cultural differences, do mass killings have in common ?”, which yielded Worse Than War: Genocide, Eliminationism, and the Ongoing Assault on Humanity, about the global nature of genocide, and averting such crimes against humanity.

In 2002, Goldhagen published A Moral Reckoning: The Role of the Catholic Church in the Holocaust and Its Unfulfilled Duty of Repair, his account of the role of the Catholic Church before, during and after World War II.

In the book, Goldhagen acknowledges that individual bishops and priests hid and saved a large number of Jews, but also asserts that others promoted or accepted anti-Semitism before and during the war, and some played a direct role in the persecution of Jews in Europe during the Holocaust.

However, Kershaw later went on to recommend Norman Finkelstein and Ruth Bettina Birn's extremely critical assessment of Goldhagen's book, A Nation on Trial: The Goldhagen Thesis and Historical Truth ; stating that " Finkelstein and Birn provide a devastating critique of Daniel Goldhagen's simplistic and misleading interpretation of the Holocaust.

Goldhagen in his turn has accused Bauer of not understanding his arguments properly and of being jealous of what Goldhagen considers to be his discovery of the “ key ” that explains the entire Holocaust.

The Canadian historian Fred Kautz called Wehler an anti-Semite for his attacks on Goldhagen Kautz wrote that " He doesn't dare say it openly that he thinks Goldhagen is incapable of writing about the Holocaust because he is a Jew ... It's flabbergasting what perverse ideas are dreamt up in the studies of German professors, where according to an ancient legend, one seeks the truth unperturbed, " sine ira et studio " (" with diligence and without anger "): the victims of history should not be allowed to write their own history!
