On 9 February 1953, Bedlington Grammar School pupil Charlton was spotted playing for East Northumberland schools by Manchester United chief scout Joe Armstrong.

He went to the City of Leicester Boys ' Grammar School ( now City of Leicester College ) on Downing Drive in Evington, inside the borough of Leicester due to his preference for football rather than rugby, which was the main sport of most schools near his home.

Grammar schools have been retained in some counties in England.

* King Edward VI of England founds 35 grammar schools by royal charter, including Shrewsbury ; Leeds Grammar School is also established.

* Penistone Grammar School, later to be one of the first community comprehensive schools in England, is founded near Barnsley, England.

Several of the state secondary schools now specialise: Astor College for the Arts ; Dover Grammar School for Girls is a selective specialist Humanities College ; Dover Grammar School for Boys, a selective Business and Enterprise College ; St Edmund's Catholic College for the Performing Arts ; and Dover Christ Church Academy, a specialist Maths, ICT and Music Academy.

Following the Education Act 1944 there was disaffection with the tripartite system of academically-oriented Grammar schools for a small proportion of " gifted " children, and Technical and Secondary Modern schools for the majority of children.

Other schools which have since closed include: Bridgwater Grammar School For Boys, Bridgwater Grammar School For Girls and Westover Senior Council School.

Armstrong was educated at private schools in Newcastle and Whickham, near Gateshead until he was sixteen, when he was sent to Bishop Auckland Grammar School.

A number of Traralgon families also send their children to the three independent Anglican grammar schools in the region, two of which are about 40 minutes drive from Traralgon: St. Paul's Anglican Grammar School, which has a campus in Traralgon as well as Warragul, or Gippsland Grammar School in Sale.

Salisbury also includes the only two grammar schools in Wiltshire: South Wilts Grammar School for Girls and Bishop Wordsworth's School, which is for boys.

Shortly after, the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, founded in 1784, relocated from Brooklyn, New York, to New Brunswick, and shared facilities with Queen's College ( and the Queen's College Grammar School, as all three institutions were then overseen by the Reformed Church in America ).

The English naval hero, Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson and his brother William were educated at Paston Grammar School in North Walsham, founded by Sir William Paston ( of Paston Letters fame ) in 1606.

Around the turn of the century, many huge and expensive buildings were erected and became symbols for the area's wealth ; massive chapels and a new Grammar School were built in Cleckheaton, and to mark the new urban district and the fact that it was the centre of it, Cleckheaton built a town hall in 1892, paid for by public subscription.

After returning to Worcester to teach English at the Royal Grammar School, he played cricket for Worcestershire.
