Including HOV Lanes and local bypass lanes, this merge spans 22 lanes at the widest point.

Work is also underway to add two HOV Lanes between State Route 52 and Mira Mesa Boulevard.

* Roads to the Future – Virginia Freeway HOV Lanes

HOV Lanes and Managed Lanes – Since the 1980s, many major metropolitan areas have developed HOV or High Occupancy Vehicle lanes to help with traffic flow and provide incentives for carpooling and public transit.

Some cities have taken the HOV lane concept one step further in the development of what ’ s being called Managed Lanes.

* Construct a bridge from eastbound Route 644 onto the I-95 HOV Lanes ( northbound only ).

This phase was originally planned to be part of the Springfield Interchange Project but due to cost overruns was moved to the future Capital Beltway widening project, which was to include HOV Lanes on the Capital Beltway.

The HOV system will soon get an overhaul in the event of major freeway construction to take place in Houston and may have HOV lanes in both directions with the concept of HOT ( Toll ) lanes introduced.

In the 1990s, both sides of SR-520 from the I-405 interchange to W Lake Sammamish Parkway were widened to add a HOV lane on both sides, and collector-distributor lanes were added from NE 40th Street to W Lake Sammamish Parkway.

The new lanes, and frustration over failures of public-transport systems and high fuel prices, led to the creation in the 1970s of " slugging ", a form of hitchhiking between strangers that is beneficial to both parties, as drivers and passengers are able to use the HOV lane for a quicker trip.

As of 2012, the I-95 / I395 HOV facility is long and extends from Washington, D. C. to Dumfries, Virginia, has two reversible lanes separated from the regular lanes by barriers, with access through on and off elevated ramps.

However, in July 2006, the hybrid / HOV privilege was revoked.

The Northwest Line towards Cobb County has a stub tunnel east of Atlantic Station, but that redevelopment has not been built with a MARTA station in mind, and Cobb County would instead most likely get a light rail or commuter rail system ( either of which have been studied ) or a bus rapid transit service ( see Northwest Corridor HOV / BRT ).

* Replacement of the Evergreen Point Floating Bridge and freeway expansion to 6 lanes ( 2 general-purpose / 1 HOV per side ) between Interstate 5 and Interstate 405.

* Freeway expansion to 8 lanes ( 2 general-purpose / 1 HOV / 1 auxiliary lane per side ) between West Lake Sammamish Parkway and State Route 202, along with widening existing ramps between SR-202 and Avondale Road to 2 lanes.

The southern part of I-575 was slated to be widened to a total of six through lanes in the next few years, as part of the Northwest Corridor HOV / BRT plan from the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority ( GRTA ).

The extra lane in each direction would extend up to Sixes Road, and was planned to be an HOV / HOT lane, with special exits at smaller roads that currently do not have any direct access.

When I-64 was augmented in the 1990s with reversible HOV lanes, I-264 towards Virginia Beach ( then SR 44 ) was designated as the eastern terminus of the reversible lanes and one of the few direct exits from / entrances to the HOV lanes.

All 400-series highways should have at least two lanes in each direction, with HOV lanes separated from general traffic with a striped buffer zone and full shoulder if necessary.

Sections of Highway 1 from the Grandview Highway to 152nd Street in Surrey vary from being 3 to 4 lanes in each direction, with one of these lanes being a high-occupancy vehicle ( HOV ) lane.

The project widened I-17 from 2 lanes to 3 general purpose lanes and an HOV lane from Loop 101 to Carefree Highway and 3 lanes in each direction from Carefree Highway to Anthem Way.

Slugging lines are common in some places, where solo drivers pick up a passenger to share the ride and allow use of the HOV lane.

The first freeway HOV lane in the United States was implemented in the Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway in Northern Virginia, between Washington DC and the Capital Beltway, and was opened in 1969 as a bus-only lane.

The busway was opened in December 1973 to carpools with four or more occupants, becoming the first instance in which buses and carpools officially shared a HOV lane over a considerable distance.

The second freeway HOV facility was the contraflow bus lane on the Lincoln Tunnel Approach and Helix in Hudson County, New Jersey in 1970.

Since METRO Express buses use them during rush hour, most routes lead to the Park and Ride lots and use " secret " HOV lane exits ( often elevated T-intersections ) that lead to the lots ( also used by vehicles as well ) without having to exit the freeway to street intersections.

HOV or multiple occupancy lanes are the classic example, an example being the widening of the M1 motorway to the north of London, where the extra capacity will be used for an HOV lane during the peaks.
