Israeli independence in 1948 was marked by massive migrations of Jews from both Europe and the Islamic world to Israel, and of Arabs from Israel leading to extensive conflict with the Arab League.

However conflict with the Arab states and the Palestinians, much of whose territory was occupied by Israel during the 1967 war, continues to play a major role in Israeli ( and international ) political, social and economic life.

The 1948 Palestine war entered its second phase with the intervention of the Arab state armies and the beginning of the 1948 Arab – Israeli War.

Over the next few days the armies of Egypt, Trans-Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, and Syria invaded Israel, and officially and militarily threatened to occupy the whole of the former Mandate territory, thereby starting the 1948 Arab – Israeli War, known in Israel as the War of Independence (, Milhamat HaAtzma ' ut ).
