Two examples of this were civilian test pilots Hanna Reitsch and Melitta Schenk Gräfin von Stauffenberg, who were awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class and 2nd Class respectively for their actions as pilots during World War II.

Hanna Reitsch ( 29 March 1912 – 24 August 1979 ) was a German aviator and the only woman awarded the Iron Cross First Class and the Luftwaffe Combined Pilots-Observation Badge in Gold with Diamonds during World War II.

Hanna Reitsch, his mistress and a crack test pilot, landed von Greim on an improvised air strip in the Tiergarten near the Brandenburg Gate.

Hanna Reitsch demonstrated the Focke-Wulf Fw 61, the first fully controllable helicopter ( as opposed to autogyro ), in Berlin in 1938.

Virtually every German aeronautical engineer and test pilot of note during the 1920s and 30s spent time building, testing, and flying aircraft at the Wasserkuppe, including the Günter brothers, Wolf Hirth, the Horten brothers, Robert Kronfeld, Hans Jacobs, Alexander Lippisch, Willy Messerschmitt, Hanna Reitsch, Peter Riedel, Alexander Schleicher and many, many others.

Hanna Reitsch also went, and the two became good friends.

Test pilot Hanna Reitsch carried out a test programme on the two prototypes of the glider version, releasing from tow aircraft at altitudes of 3, 000-6, 000 m ( 9, 800-19, 700 ft ).

In 1962 the national school of gliding was set up by Hanna Reitsch, who was once Adolf Hitler's top personal pilot.

On 26 April 1945, the improvised landing strip was used by Hanna Reitsch to fly in Colonel-General Robert Ritter von Greim, appointed by Hitler as head of the Luftwaffe after Hermann Göring's dismissal.
