Slayer is an American thrash metal band formed in Huntington Park, California in 1981 by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King.

Hanneman, King, and bassist / vocalist Tom Araya, contribute to the band's lyrics.

King and Hanneman create and arrange the music with additional arrangement from drummer Dave Lombardo and sometimes Araya.

Slayer was founded in 1981, when guitarist Kerry King met Jeff Hanneman while auditioning for a band.

" Guitarist Jeff Hanneman has since said that South of Heaven was the only album the band members discussed before writing the music.

" Hanneman said: " We go through dry spells sometimes, but the good thing about having two guitar players that can write music is that you are never gonna go without.

Hanneman described the track as " more just like one of those odd songs that a lot of people didn't know, but it was a favorite of Kerry and I, so we just picked that one.

" Behind the Crooked Cross " is rarely played live as Hanneman hates the track, though King has always wanted to play it " because it's got a cool intro " despite it not being his favorite song.

Slayer has toyed with the idea of creating a live set mixed with selections from the album and 1990's Seasons in the Abyss, though Hanneman has said it's something which hasn't been " seriously considered.

He co-founded the band with Jeff Hanneman in 1981 and has been a member ever since.

After the session was over Jeff Hanneman approached him and the two began playing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest songs with the session drummer.

The back cover featured ' side 666 ' and inverted crosses, with Hanneman playing his guitar.

Musically, the album features the band's most progressive and diverse work compared to their previous releases, and according to Kerry King, he and Jeff Hanneman were very into Mercyful Fate at the time, which then led to the longer and more progressive songs.

Named after the late Robert Hanneman, Jr., a potato geneticist at the University of Wisconsin and friend of the college, Hanneman Hall houses Maranatha's nursing program and science department.
