Named for Justice Harlan, the " Harlan Scholars " of the University of Louisville / Louis D. Brandeis School of Law, is an undergraduate organization for students interested in attending law school.

Along with pioneer Iowa politician James Harlan, Kirkwood's sculptured likeness is maintained among the two coveted statues apportioned to each state on display under the rotunda in Statuary Hall in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.
