* 1966 – Malawi becomes a republic, with Hastings Banda as its first President.

In July 1958, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda returned to the country after a long absence in the United States ( where he had obtained his medical degree at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee in 1937 ), the United Kingdom ( where he practised medicine ), and Ghana.

Hastings Banda became Prime Minister on 1 February 1963, although the British still controlled the country's financial, security, and judicial systems.

Two years later, Malawi adopted a republican constitution and became a one-party state with Hastings Banda as its first president.

In 1970 Hastings Banda was declared President for life of the MCP, and in 1971 Banda consolidated his power and was named President for life of Malawi itself.

Malawi's former President Bakili Muluzi continued the pro-Western foreign policy established by former President Hastings Banda.

Hastings Banda recognized the Republic of China in 1967.

Led by dictator Hastings Banda, Malawi was the only African country to maintain close relations with White-ruled South Africa until the 1994 election of Nelson Mandela.

Hastings Kamuzu Banda ( 15 February 1898 – 25 November 1997 ) was the leader of Malawi and its predecessor state, Nyasaland, from 1961 to 1994.

His official title was His Excellency the Life President of the Republic of Malaŵi, Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Thomas (" Tom ") Coleman Lowry ( 17 February 1898 in Fern Hill, Hawke's Bay – 20 July 1976 in Okawa, Hastings ) was a New Zealand cricketer.

Smith lost his seat by 103 votes at the 1898 New South Wales election when he ran on what many considered to be an anti-federalist stance and ran unsuccessfully against Edmund Barton for Hastings and Macleay in a by-election later that same year before returning to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly in a by-election for Canterbury on 9 June 1900.
