When the Justice Society's forced attempt to stop them by sending Hawkman and Captain Marvel against them met with failure and resulted in Superman and Batman briefly infiltrating the White House, Luthor, in an enraged and desperate gambit after Superman's rapid defeats of his plans, used a variant combination of the " super-steroid " Venom ( a chemical associated with the Batman villain Bane ), liquid synthetic Kryptonite, and an Apokoliptian battlesuit to fight Superman directly.
Describing the origins of Hawkman, Fox recalled, " I was faced with the problem of filling a new book that publisher Max Gaines was starting ... As I sat by the window I noticed a bird collecting twigs for a nest.
Each character-Fate, Sandman, Flash and Hawkman were joined by Dr. Mid-Nite, Hour-Man, the Spectre, the Atom and Green Lantern-was introduced individually ( by Johnny Thunder ), and related a solo adventure, before being charged at the title's end with remaining a loose team by the Director of the FBI.
The chairmanship of the Justice Society mostly resided with Hawkman, although initially the Flash, and later Green Lantern, took their turns at leading the team.
