Hay fever sufferers may show signs of Oral allergy syndrome or OAS, which is a type of food allergy classified by a cluster of allergic reactions in the mouth in response to eating certain ( usually fresh ) fruits, nuts, and vegetables that typically develops in adult hay fever sufferers.

Hay fever isn't caused by hay and does not exhibit symptoms of fever, but since grasses shed their pollens into the air at about the same time that hay is being cut, the common term hay fever is used.

Hay fever in Japan is caused primarily by sugi ( Cryptomeria japonica ) and hinoki ( Chamaecyparis obtusa ) tree pollen.
