Contemporary with Dufay were composers such as Gilles Binchois, who was at the Burgundian court between approximately 1430 and 1460, and Hayne van Ghizeghem, a composer, singer and soldier who may have been killed in the last military campaign of Charles the Bold.

Hayne van Ghizeghem (– 1476 – 1497 ) was a Franco-Flemish composer of the early Renaissance Burgundian School.

Also in 1467 Busnois was listed along with Hayne van Ghizeghem and Adrien Basin as a " chantre et valet de chambre " to Charles.

In addition to his duties as a singer and a composer, Busnois accompanied the Duke on his military campaigns, as did Hayne van Ghizeghem.

In addition, music by the composers favored the previous dukes of Burgundy such as Charles the Bold – Adrien Basin, Gilles Joye, Hayne van Ghizeghem, and Robert Morton – was also probably still being performed and studied.

His thirty chansons show a diversity of style, some being rather similar to the late Burgundian style ( for example, as seen in Hayne van Ghizeghem or Gilles Binchois ), and others using the more current imitative polyphonic style.

The long relatively peaceful period at the court under Philip the Good's reign ended with Philip's death in 1467, and under his successor Charles the Bold, the musical activities of the court were seriously disrupted ; many of the singers and composers, including Hayne van Ghizeghem, took part in his many futile military campaigns.

Peñalosa was evidently fond of contrapuntal puzzles and canons, as evidenced by the quodlibet, and by the Agnus Dei of his Missa Ave Maria peregrina, which combines a plainsong tune with a retrograde ( backwards ) version of a famous secular song by Hayne van Ghizeghem.

Most of his chansons look back to the style of Antoine Busnois and Hayne van Ghizeghem, while his motet writing, and especially his mass writing, shows elements of Italian influence, such as a chordal rather than a densely contrapuntal style.

The Webster – Hayne debate was a famous debate in the United States between Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts and Senator Robert Y. Hayne of South Carolina that took place on January 19-27, 1830 on the topic of protectionist tariffs.

He is known to have been at the Siege of Beauvais in 1472, where Charles was decisively repulsed by the French, and Hayne was long presumed by scholars to have been killed in that battle.

This angered Southern leaders and brought Webster into dispute with South Carolina's Robert Young Hayne, later evolving to what would be the Webster-Hayne debate.
