Cerberus featured in many prominent works of Greek and Roman literature, most famously in Virgil's Aeneid, Peisandros of Rhodes ' epic poem the Labours of Hercules, the story of Orpheus in Plato's Symposium, and in Homer's Iliad, which is the only known reference to one of Heracles ' labours which first appeared in a literary source.

In Virgil's Aeneid, VIII, where Aeneas and his crew first come upon Evander and his people, they were venerating Hercules for dispatching the giant Cacus.

Virgil's listeners would have related this scene to the same Great Altar of Hercules in the Forum Boarium of their own day, one detail among many in the Aeneid that Virgil used to link the heroic past of myth with the Age of Augustus.

According to Virgil in Book VIII of the Aeneid, Hercules grasped Cacus so tightly that Cacus ' eyes popped out and there was no blood left in his throat: " et angit inhaerens elisos oculos et siccum sanguine guttur.

In Virgil's Aeneid, a cave on the Aventine's rocky slope next the river is home to the monstrous Cacus, killed by Hercules for stealing Geryon's cattle.

Its major literary sources are two almost identical passages, one in Servius ' commentary on the Aeneid ( viii. 363 ) and the other in Macrobius Saturnalia Though Servius mentions that aedes duae sunt, " there are two sacred temples ", the earliest Roman calendars mention but one festival, on 13 August, to Hercules Victor and Hercules Invictus interchangeably.

Aristophanes, in The Clouds, deals more indulgently with him than with Socrates ; and Xenophon's Socrates, for the purpose of combating the voluptuousness of Aristippus, borrows from the book of " the wise Prodicus " the story of the choice of Hercules.

He won a wider fan following for his occasional appearances as the God Hades in both the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess series, which were both filmed in New Zealand.
