Hiawatha Thompson Estes ( b. 26 Jan 1918-d. 8 May 2003 ) was a California-based architect and author known for designing a large number of variations of the ubiquitous post-war ranch home, mass marketing plans of them, and publishing a number of books dealing with residential architecture.

After the war, Estes founded " Architectural House and Plan Business, Nationwide Plan Book " which was to evolve into Hiawatha Estes and Associates.

Estes was a resident of Northridge, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and remarkable for the number and diversity of ranch homes, some of which are Hiawatha Estes designs.

He remained in London until 1868, supporting himself by office work and poetic translations, among which were an anthology, the Rose, Thistle, and Shamrock ( 1854 ), Longfellow's Hiawatha ( 1857 ), and Shakespeare's Cymbeline and The Winter's Tale.

" Hiawatha was not " another name for the same personage " ( the mistaken identification of the trickster figure was made first by Schoolcraft and compounded by Longfellow ), but a probable historical figure associated with the founding of the League of the Iroquois, the Five Nations then located in present-day New York and Pennsylvania.

But, according to the ethnographer Horatio Hale ( 1817 – 1896 ), there was a longstanding confusion between the Iroquois leader Hiawatha and the Iroquois deity Aronhiawagon due to " an accidental similarity in the Onondaga dialect between names.

Arthur Foote set the poet's words in " The Farewell of Hiawatha " ( Op. 11, 1886 ), dedicating it to the Apollo Club of Boston, the male voice group that gave its first performance.

Longfellow's poem was the basis for a cantata trilogy, The Song of Hiawatha ( 1898 – 1900 ), by the African-English composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.

Other popular songs have included " Hiawatha ’ s Melody of Love ", by George W. Meyer with words by Alfred Bryan and Artie Mehlinger ( 1908 ), and Al Bowlly's " Hiawatha ’ s Lullaby " ( 1933 ).

They include the English musician Stanley Wilson's " Hiawatha, 12 Scenes " ( 1928 ) for first grade solo piano, based on Longfellow's lines, and Soon Hee Newbold's " Hiawatha " for junior string orchestra ( 2003 ), a rhythmic composition in Dorian mode.

In the 20th century, Marshall Fredericks executed a small bronze Hiawatha ( 1938 ), now installed in the Michigan University Centre ; a limestone statue ( 1949 ), also at the University of Michigan ; and a relief installed at the Birmingham Covington School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Other examples include Thomas Moran's Fiercely the Red Sun Descending, Burned His Way along the Heavens ( 1875 ), held by the North Carolina Museum of Art, and the panoramic waterfalls of Hiawatha and Minnehaha on their Honeymoon ( 1885 ) by Jerome Thompson ( 1814 – 1886 ).

George was the grandson of Memphis lawyer Bedford Mitchell Estes, he was the son of Emily Alston Estes and James G. Snedecor, and nephew of Ione Estes Dodd and William J. Dodd, the great midwest architect.
