His book The Last Days of Hitler was a popular and critical success.

The ensuing investigation resulted in Trevor-Roper's most famous book, The Last Days of Hitler ( 1947, with revised editions as late as 1995 ), in which he described the last ten days of Hitler's life, and the fates of some of the higher-ranking members of the inner circle as well of those lesser figures whose evidence was important for reconstructing this penultimate chapter of the war.

In response to The Last Days of Hitler, Trevor-Roper received a death threat from the Stern Gang for his supposed over-emphasis on Hitler's charisma, which the authors of the death threat felt had exonerated the German people.

In 2002 he published Inside Hitler's Bunker: The Last Days of the Third Reich, a work based on newly-available evidence following the opening of the Soviet archives, but which largely confirmed the account of Hitler's death given in Hugh Trevor-Roper's book The Last Days of Hitler ( 1947 ).

He returned to Germany in January 1933, and published Bevor Hitler kam: Urkundlich aus der Frühzeit der Nationalsozialistischen Bewegung ( Before Hitler Came: Documents from the Early Days of the National Socialist Movement ), dealing with the Thule Society and the DAP.

The Forty Days of Musa Dagh also foreshadows the Holocaust of World War II due in part to the rise of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany, which paralleled the novel's creation.

Voss later recounted: " When Goebbels learned that Hitler had committed suicide, he was very depressed and said: ' It is a great pity that such a man is not with us any longer.

For us, everything is lost now and the only way left for us is the one which Hitler chose.
