Hopkins began receiving regular letters from other UFO witnesses, including a few cases of what would later be called " missing time " — inexplicable gaps in one's memory, associated with UFO encounters.

Controversy was a persistent feature of Hopkins ' career in alien abduction and UFO studies.

The UFO Club ( pronounced Yoof-oh ) was founded by John Hopkins ( usually known as " Hoppy ") and Joe Boyd in an Irish dancehall called the " Blarney Club " in the basement of 31 Tottenham Court Road, under the Gala Berkeley Cinema.

This had been because Boyd and Hopkins could not decide on " UFO " or " Night Tripper " as a name for their club.

Hopkins and Boyd had to cast around for a new " house band " for UFO.

Hopkins also set up the UFO Club with Joe Boyd, with Pink Floyd as the resident band.

Hopkins favoured the more anarchistic elements in the " underground " centred around Ladbroke Grove, like former UFO doorman Mick Farren, who by 1967 was also working at the IT newspaper.
