The serial Horror of Fang Rock, set during the early 20th century, hinted that the Sontarans had gained the upper hand, but this proved merely a temporary setback for the Rutans ; " The Poison Sky ", set during the early 21st century, hinted that the Rutans were winning at that point.

A fictional use of this idea is the basis for the Doctor Who serial Horror of Fang Rock.

The Rutans only appeared on television in the serial Horror of Fang Rock, in which a single Rutan is encountered, though they are mentioned in some serials featuring Sontarans ( The Time Warrior, The Sontaran Experiment, The Two Doctors, The Poison Sky and The Last Sontaran and Enemy of the Bane episodes of Doctor Who spin off The Sarah Jane Adventures ).

Horror of Fang Rock is the first serial of the 15th season in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts from 3 September to 24 September 1977.

State of Decay was in fact a rewritten version of a story entitled The Vampire Mutation which had been due for production during season fifteen, but had been hastily withdrawn and replaced with Horror of Fang Rock when the BBC decided that its vampiric theme would clash with their high-profile adaptation of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula, which was due for transmission at around the same time.

* This serial marks a number of firsts: the first appearance of both Sarah Jane Smith and the Sontarans ; the first mention of the name Gallifrey, in reference to the Doctor's home planet ; and the Rutans who would later appear in Horror of Fang Rock.

To explain the change in-story, writer Terrance Dicks wrote a scene in the 1977 serial Horror of Fang Rock in which Leela's eyes suffer " pigment dispersal " and turn blue after viewing the explosion of the Rutan ship.

These dramas began to be released in January 2012 and are adaptations of stories planned for the TV but never produced, as well as original storylines set in the gap between The Talons of Weng-Chiang and Horror of Fang Rock.
