The design of today's FDR is governed by the internationally recognized standards and recommended practices relating to flight recorders which are contained in ICAO Annex 6 which makes reference to industry crashworthiness and fire protection specifications such as those to be found in the European Organisation for Civil Aviation Equipment documents EUROCAE ED55, ED56 fiken A and ED112 ( Minimum Operational Performance Specification for Crash Protected Airborne Recorder Systems ).

NDBs used for aviation are standardised by ICAO Annex 10 which specifies that NDBs be operated on a frequency between 190 kHz and 1750 kHz, although normally all NDBs in North America operate between 190 kHz and 535 kHz.

The term aerodrome is used in International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ) documents, for example in the Annex to the ICAO Convention about aerodromes, their physical characteristics and their operation.

Both codes are defined at the technical regulation level in WMO Technical Regulation No. 49, Vol II, which is copied over to the WMO Manual No. 306 and to ICAO Annex III.

States are required, according to ICAO Annex 13 on Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation, to report to ICAO information on accidents and serious incidents to aircraft with a maximum certificated take-off mass ( MTOM ) over 2250 kg.

The international standard for PAPI is published by the International Civil Aviation Organisation ( ICAO ) in " Aerodromes, Annex 14 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation, Volume 1, Chapter 5 ".

In 2012 the Pacific Aerospace P-750 XSTOL aircraft was certified against ICAO Annex 6 for Single Engine IFR Passenger Transport Operations.

Finding US and Cuban radar-based data on the location in mutual contradiction ( see image ), the ICAO used the known positions of the cruise liner Majesty of the Seas and fishing boat Tri-Liner to locate the incidents at 10 to 11 miles ( 18 to 20 km ) outside Cuba's 12-mile limit.
