It was never adopted by any code because by that time the inappropriateness of the ICBN code and the ICZN Code for classifying life forms that are neither plant nor animal was also generally recognized and the ICNB code did not appear until 1975.

But the ICZN Code does not give an example for such a case.

The use of a narrow set of ranks is challenged by users of cladistics ; for example, the mere 10 ranks traditionally used between animal families ( governed by the ICZN ) and animal phyla ( usually the highest relevant rank in taxonomic work ) often cannot adequately represent the evolutionary history as more about a lineage's phylogeny becomes known.

Although some authors still consider the wild yak to be a subspecies, Bos grunniens mutus, the ICZN made an official ruling in 2003 permitting the use of the name Bos mutus for wild yaks, and this is now the more common usage.

However, the rules of the ICZN state that if a name has never been considered valid after 1899, it could be removed from competition for priority, becoming a nomen oblitum ( forgotten name ), while the junior synonym ( in this case Megalosaurus bucklandi ) could be made a nomen protectum ( protected name ).

The ICZN does not always demand a type specimen for the historical validity of a species, and many " type-less " species do exist.

Within the ICZN there has been a proposed emendation of spelling to Clionaidae for the sponge family.

The Labyrinthulomycetes ( ICBN ) or Labyrinthulea ( ICZN ), or Slime nets are a class of protists that produce a network of filaments or tubes, which serve as tracks for the cells to glide along and absorb nutrients for them.

In the end, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature ( ICZN ) voted to make one of the Ghost Ranch samples the actual type specimen for Coelophysis and dispose of the name Rioarribasaurus altogether ( declaring it a nomen rejectum, or " rejected name "), thus resolving the confusion.
