By the spring of 1854, several members of the local Shiloh community ( Capt Thomas F. Wilson, Dr H. Mosely, and Mr Jesse Smith ) constructed a small log cabin to be used as the community's school house.

Their organ was the newspaper Argus of Albany, founded in 1813 by Jesse Buel ( 1778-1839 ) and edited from 1824 to 1854 by Croswell.

The private " Edgington and Wells Railroad " ( named after its owners, Jesse Edgington and Nathaniel Wells of Brooke County ) opened July 4, 1854 but failed later that year, as it did not connect to any other railroads.

The Chicago Great Western, circa 1897. In 1854, the Legislature of the Territory of Minnesota had chartered the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad ( M & NW ) to be built between Lake Superior, Minneapolis and Dubuque, Iowa.

David M. Beam ( 1833 – 1913 ) in 1854 moved the distillery to Nelson County to capitalize on the growing network of railroad lines connecting states.

Judge Williamson Dunn ( December 25, 1781-November 11, 1854 ), from Mercer County, Kentucky, was 27 when, on November 28, 1808, he purchased the land area of modern Hanover from the federal government.

Lake Washington received its present name in 1854 after Thomas Mercer suggested it be named after George Washington, as the new Washington Territory had been named the year before.

Lake Union received its present name from Thomas Mercer, who in 1854 correctly predicted that canals would someday join Lake Washington to Puget Sound in a " union of waters.

He graduated from Mercer University in 1854, studied law, and, starting in 1857, served two years in the Georgia General Assembly.

Mercer became Colonial Secretary on 29 November 1854 and remained thereafter the chief executive officer of the Colony until retirement on pension in 1867.

Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling ( 1775 – 1854 ), his student Johann Baptist von Spix ( 1781-1826 ) and several others followed the idea that was a hidden and innate mathematical order in the forms of birds.

During this golden era of Galveston's history, the city was home to a number of state firsts that include among others the first post office ( 1836 ), the first naval base ( 1836 ), the first Texas chapter of a Masonic order ( 1840 ); the first cotton compress ( 1842 ), the first parochial school ( Ursuline Academy ) ( 1847 ), the first insurance company ( 1854 ), the first gas lights ( 1856 ), the first opera house ( 1870 ), the first orphanage ( 1876 ), the first telephone ( 1878 ) and the first electric lights ( 1883 ).

Batchelder, along with others, was preventing the rescue of fugitive slave Anthony Burns in Boston in 1854.

His most notorious exploit took place during the Crimean War on 25 October 1854 when, in command of the Light Cavalry Brigade at the battle of Balaclava, he led the charge of the Light Brigade, reaching the Russian guns before returning, personally unscathed, in a manoeuvre that cost the lives of about 107 out of the 674 men under his command who took part in the charge ( although others may have died of wounds later on ).

Edward " Ned " Kelly, born sometime between June 1854 and June 1855, was an Irish-Australian bushranger, and was seen by some as merely a cold-blooded killer, while to others he was a folk hero for his defiance of the colonial authorities.

On 5 November 1854 at the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea, when the Right Lancaster Battery was attacked and many of the soldiers were wounded, Seaman Reeves, with two other seamen ( James Gorman and Mark Scholefield ) and two others who were killed during the action, mounted the defence work banquette and, under withering attack from the enemy, kept up a rapid, repulsing fire.

In an area of southern West Virginia not yet reached by either the C & O or the N & W, there was land owned by many others, including Peter Cooper ( 1791 – 1883 ) and Abram S. Hewitt ( 1822 – 1903 ) ( or their estates and heirs ), Henry Huttleston Rogers ( 1840 – 1909 ) and William Nelson Page ( 1854 – 1932 ).

Allan was able to return to Edinburgh in 1814, and, in 1815, his picture of " Circassian Captives " attracted notice at the Royal Academy, though it did not find a purchaser ; however Sir Walter Scott, John Wilson ( 1785 – 1854 ) and his brother James ( 1795 – 1856 ), John Lockhart, and others, raised a lottery for it, with 100 subscribers at £ 10 10s.

The Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad was organized in 1877 as a consolidation of three others — the Chicago, Danville and Vincennes Railroad ( Chicago-Danville, November 1871 ), the Evansville, Terre Haute and Chicago Railroad ( Danville-Terre Haute, October 1871 ) and the Evansville and Terre Haute ( Terre Haute-Evansville, November 1854 ).
