While the LaPerm gene is a simple dominant, the Selkirk gene ( Se ) acts as an incomplete dominant ; incompletely dominant, allele pairs produce three possible genotypes and phenotypes: heterozygous cats ( Sese ) may have a fuller coat that is preferred in the show ring, while homozygous cats ( SeSe ) may have a tighter curl and less coat volume.

Homozygous cats ( with two copies of the dominant Selkirk Rex gene ) may have a tendency towards excessive greasiness of the coat, requiring increased frequency of bathing.

Cornish Rex cats come in a wide variety of coat colours and patterns, outlined in the breed standard: solids, including white, black, chocolate, orange and the dilutes blue, lilac and cream ; all forms of tabby including classic, mackerel and ticked tabbies, bicolor " tuxedo " coat in many colours, tortoiseshell, " smoke " colours and the colour-point pattern standard in the Siamese breed.

Since Cornish Rex cats groom as much as or even more than ordinary cats, a Cornish Rex cat can still produce a reaction in people who are allergic to cats.

The Devon Rex's coat is unusual because there is little guard hair ( see Cornish Rex and Sphynx for more information on hair-deficient genetics in cats ).

The curl in Devon Rex fur is caused by a different mutation and gene than that of the Cornish Rex and German Rex, and breeding of a Devon with either of those cats results in cats without rexed ( curled ) fur.

Devon Rex cats come in all colors.

Cat breeds such as the LaPerm, Sphynx, Devon Rex and Cornish Rex, which lack some or all of the normal layers in cats ' fur, are believed by mild allergy sufferers to be significantly less likely to provoke an allergic reaction than other breeds.

The history of this breed began in 1967 when Jennie Robinson ( Neotype Cattery ) of New York purchased " Thomas " and " Shirley ," a pair of semi-foreign longhaired chocolate cats with gold eyes and unknown background, which were being sold as part of an estate sale.

The breed was developed by crossing the Burmese, Abyssinian, and Domestic shorthair cats to create a shorthaired cat with a spotted coat.

The name was changed from ' Spotted Mist ' to ' Australian Mist ' in 1998 when cats with marbled coats, rather than spots, were accepted as part of the breed.

As a relatively new breed, most Australian Mist catteries are in Australia, however there are a few in the U. K. and some desexed cats have been introduced to America and several other countries.

Regardless of breed, any cat with solid gray coloration has two pairs of double-recessive genes for the non-agouti and color-dilution traits, and so an exclusive mating between two solid gray cats should always produce solid gray kittens.

This breed was created by color-selecting domestic longhaired cats, and as the name suggests, all members of this breed are solid chocolate or lilac, chocolate and white, or lilac and white ( see bicolor cat ).

This coloration is not restricted to a specific breed of cat, as it can be found in many different types of pure-breed as well as mixed-breed domestic cats.

However, some breeds of cats are especially noted for having bicolor coats in their breed standards.

Responsible breeders screen their breeding cats for these diseases to minimize their impact on the breed.

Sphynx cats also appear to have more ear wax than most hairy domestic cats because they have little to no hair in their ears to catch and protect them from a build up of impurities in their ears, like dirt, skin oils ( sebum ), and ear wax which accumulates more frequently in the hairless sphynx breed.

The Turkish Van is a longhaired breed of domestic cat that is descended from the landrace of Van cats found near Lake Van in modern Turkey.

The breed was developed in Britain from a selection of Van cats obtained from Eastern Turkey in 1955.
