Some avant-garde composers of the 20th century include Arnold Schoenberg, Charles Ives, Igor Stravinsky, Harry Partch, Olivier Messiaen, Elliott Carter, John Cage, and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

The St Ives Rowing Club was once captained by John Goldie and has had a number of members who have competed at Olympic and Commonwealth championships.

The English Provost Marshal ( Anthony Kingston ) came to St Ives and invited the portreeve, John Payne, to lunch at an inn.

Behind the village stands the Knill Monument, known locally as " The Steeple ", a 50-foot ( 15 m ) high monument to John Knill, a mayor of nearby St Ives during the 18th century.

According to James B. Sinclair's catalogue of Ives ' works, the sonata was publicly premiered by John Kirkpatrick on November 28, 1938 in Cos Cob, Connecticut.

His influence was important to the development of modernism within St Ives, and it can be seen most conspicuously in the paintings and constructions of John Wells and Peter Lanyon, both of whom developed a softer more pastoral form of Constructivism.

The first manually powered cleaner using vacuum principles was the " Whirlwind ", invented in Chicago in 1868 by Ives W. McGaffey.

Burl Ives was once jailed in Mona for singing " Foggy Foggy Dew ", because it was considered bawdy by the authorities.

The kazoo was used in the 1990 Koch International and 2007 Naxos Records recordings of American classical composer Charles Ives ' " Yale-Princeton Football Game ", where the kazoo chorus represents the football crowd's cheering.

St Ives is well known from the nursery rhyme and riddle " As I was going to St Ives ", although it is not clear whether the rhyme refers to the Cornish town or one of several other places called St Ives.

The Ren & Stimpy Shows first season episode " Stimpy's Invention " featured a record, " Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy ", which parodied Ives ' singing style and re-created some of his crusty dialogue from The Big Country and Summer Magic.

In the 1950s Peer published " Mockingbird Hill ", a million seller for Patti Page, " Sway " ( Dean Martin and Bobby Rydell ), and the novelty " I Know An Old Lady " ( Burl Ives ).

Musically, the songs ranged from pseudo-classical elegance (" Stranded In Time ", " Where Is Yesterday ") to aggressive discordance and hard rock (" The Garden of Earthly Delights ", " Hard Coming Love "), with heavy electronic distortion and collages of “ found ” music such as brass bands, Byrd being heavily influenced by Charles Ives.
