Although the Zhou Dynasty lasted longer than any other dynasty in Chinese history, the actual political and military control of China by the Ji () family lasted only until 771 BC, a period known as the Western Zhou.

Though King Wu died just a few years after the Battle of Muye, the Duke of Zhou assisted the young and inexperienced King Cheng in consolidating power for the Ji line: he managed a war against rebellious Zhou princes in the eastern lowlands ( allied with feudal rulers and Shang remnants ); formulated the Mandate of Heaven doctrine to counter Shang claims to a divine right of rule ; founded Chengzhou as an eastern capital ; and set up the fengjian " feudal " system designed to maintain Zhou authority as it expanded its rule over a larger amount of territory.

Towards the end of the Zhou Dynasty, the nobles did not even bother to symbolically acknowledge loyalty to the Ji family, declaring themselves to be independent kings.

The Zhou dynasty was founded by the Ji family and operated from four capitals throughout its history.

The first person named posthumously was said to be Ji Chang, named by his son Ji Fa of Zhou, as the " Civil King ", though earlier and perhaps mythological rulers such as Emperor Yao are considered to have posthumous names.

This political framework retained the fēngjiàn power structure, though interstate and intrastate conflict often led to disregard for feudal customs, respect for the Ji family, and solidarity with other Zhou peoples.

The reigns of the next four kings ( King Gong of Zhou, King Yi of Zhou ( Ji Jian ), King Xiao of Zhou, and King Yi of Zhou ( Ji Xie )) ( 922-878 BCE ) are poorly documented.

For example, the words " Amoy ", " tea " ( 茶 ; tê ), " cumshaw " ( 感謝 ; kám-siā ), and " Pekoe " ( 白毫 ; ), kowtow ( 磕頭 ; ), and possibly Japan ( Ji ̍ t-pún ) and " ketchup " ( 茄汁 ; kiô-chap ) originated from the Hokkien.

The rank of Hai Jun Yi Ji Shang Jiang ( First Class Admiral ) was never held and was abolished in 1994.
