From his two marriages, only a daughter, Joanna of Castile, had been born.

Isabella died in 1455 and Afonso married again ( although not recognized by the Papacy ) in 1475, this time to Joanna of Castile ( known as " La Beltraneja "), daughter of Henry IV of Castile and Joan of Portugal.

Castile was a much larger kingdom than Aragon, and it was inherited by Catherine's mentally unstable elder sister, Joanna.

Due to a combination of ( 1 ) the traditions of dynastic succession in Aragon, which permitted maternal inheritance with no precedence for female rule ; ( 2 ) the insanity of Charles's mother, Joanna of Castile ; and ( 3 ) the insistence by his remaining grandfather, Maximilian I, that he take up his royal titles, Charles initiated his reign in Castile and Aragon, a union which evolved into Spain, in conjunction with his mother.

Contenders for the throne of Castile were Henry's one-time heir Joanna La Beltraneja, supported by Portugal and France, and Henry's half-sister Queen Isabella I of Castile, supported by the Kingdom of Aragon and by the Castilian nobility.

Two monarchs have ruled simultaneously in some countries, as in the ancient Greek city-state of Sparta or the joint sovereignty of spouses or relatives ( e. g., William and Mary of Kingdom of England and Scotland, Peter and Ivan of Russia, Charles and Joanna of Castile, etc.

By marrying his son Philip the Handsome to the future Queen Joanna of Castile in 1498, Maximilian established the Habsburg dynasty in Spain and allowed his grandson Charles to hold the throne of both León-Castile and Aragon, thus making him the first de jure King of Spain.

There they arranged for Maximilian's granddaughter Mary to marry Louis, the son of Ladislaus, and for Anne ( the sister of Louis ) to marry Maximilian's grandson Ferdinand ( both grandchildren being the children of Philip the Handsome, Maximilian's son, and Joanna of Castile ).

He married Joanna of Castile, becoming King-consort of Castile upon her accession in 1504, and was the father of the Holy Roman Emperors Charles V and Ferdinand I

Joanna ( 6 November 1479 – 12 April 1555 ), known as Joanna the Mad (), was the first queen regnant to reign over both the Kingdoms of Castile ( 1504 – 55 ) and of Aragon ( 1516 – 55 ), a union which evolved into modern Spain.

Joanna Russ ( February 22, 1937 – April 29, 2011 ) was an American writer, academic and feminist.

In the original series, which ran on Radio 4 from 1973 – 83, no adaptation was made of the seminal Gaudy Night, perhaps because the leading character in this novel is Harriet and not Peter ; this was corrected in 2005 when a version specially recorded for the BBC Radio Collection was released starring Carmichael and Joanna David.
