In 1956, Brubeck hired Joe Morello, who had been working with Marian McPartland ; Morello's presence made possible the rhythmic experiments that were to come.

Influential drummers of the jazz tradition included Gene Krupa, " Papa " Jo Jones, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Roy Haynes, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette, Joe Morello and many more.

Mitchell came from a jazz background and like many of his contemporaries was influenced by Elvin Jones, Max Roach, and Joe Morello.

At the age of 15 Morello met the violinist Jascha Heifetz and decided that he would never be able to equal Heifetz's " sound ", so switched to drumming, first studying with a show drummer named Joe Sefcik and then George Lawrence Stone, author of the noted drum textbook Stick Control for the Snare Drummer.

Joe Morello died on March 12, 2011, at his home in Irvington, New Jersey.

One of those delightful surprise additions, which so frequently occur in jazz programs, was an excellent stint at the drums by the great Joe Jones, drumming to `` Old Man River '', which seems to have been elected the favorite solo for the boys on the batterie at this year's concerts.

Two additional compositions were attributed to him by two other jazz composers: " Betcha I Getcha ," attributed to Beiderbecke as a co-composer by Joe Venuti, the composer of the song, and " Cloudy ", attributed to Beiderbecke by composer Charlie Davis as a composition from circa 1924.

Joe " King " Oliver ( May 11, 1885 – April 10, 1938 ) was a jazz cornet player and bandleader.

His influence was such that Armstrong claimed, " if it had not been for Joe Oliver, jazz would not be what it is today ".

He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY, where he would be joined by other jazz giants such as Coleman Hawkins, Lionel Hampton, W. C. Handy, Milt Jackson, Max Roach, and Miles Davis, among others, all of whom owe a great debt to " Papa Joe ".

The band's original 1917 composition " Tiger Rag " became a jazz standard that later was covered by Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ted Lewis, Joe Jackson, and the Mills Brothers.

Joe " King " Oliver, Freddie Keppard, Bunk Johnson, and other early New Orleans jazz musicians were directly inspired by his playing.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the free jazz movement coalesced around such important ( and disparate ) figures as Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Ornette Coleman, and John Coltrane, as well as many lesser-known figures such as Joe Maneri and Joe Harriott.

Some big ensembles, like the Joe " King " Oliver outfit played a kind of half arranged, half improvised jazz, often relying on “ head ” arrangements.
