The Rydberg constant, symbol R < sub >∞</ sub > or R < sub > H </ sub >, named after the Swedish physicist Johannes Rydberg, is a physical constant relating to atomic spectra, in the science of spectroscopy.
Johannes Robert Rydberg ( November 8, 1854 – December 28, 1919 ) was a Swedish physicist mainly known for devising the Rydberg formula, in 1888, which is used to predict the wavelengths of photons ( of light and other electromagnetic radiation ) emitted by changes in the energy level of an electron in a hydrogen atom.
Within five years Johannes Rydberg came up with an empirical formula that solved the problem, presented first in 1888 and in final form in 1890.
He was acting professor for Johannes Rydberg when his health was failing, and succeeded him as full professor in 1920.
Balmer's formula was later found to be a special case of the Rydberg formula, devised by Johannes Rydberg.
