Lincoln then outmanoeuvered King Henry's northern army, under the command of the Earl of Northumberland by ordering a force under John, Lord Scrope to mount a diversionary attack on Bootham Bar, York, on 12 June.

He was born at Kirby Wiske, a village in the North Riding of Yorkshire, near Northallerton, the third son of John Ascham, steward to Baron Scrope of Bolton.

* John Francis Granville Scrope Egerton, 4th Earl of Ellesmere ( 1872 – 1944 )

Francis Egerton, created Earl of Ellesmere in 1846, inherited the library, and it remained in the family until its sale to Henry Huntington by John Francis Granville Scrope Egerton ( 1872 – 1944 ), 4th Earl of Ellesmere.

The house and estate was passed to his grandson John Scrope a baron of the Exchequer and as Scrope died without issue, his estate of Wormsley passed to the descendants of his sister Anne ( died 1720 ), who had married Henry Fane of Brympton.

He, in turn, disposed of the manor lands about 1569 or 1570 to a syndicate consisting of John Lennard, Ralph Scrope, Ralph Rokebie, Sampson Lennard, William Forest, Robert Cloughe and Henry Dyxon.

The village prospered during the fifteenth century, when it belonged to Millicent, the wife of Sir Stephen Le Scrope and then of Sir John Fastolf ( 1380 – 1459 ), a Norfolk knight who was the effective lord of the manor for fifty years.

Henry was father of Richard Scrope, 1st Baron Scrope of Bolton ( c. 1327-1403 ), chancellor of England, an active adherent of John of Gaunt.

It was, however, restored to his brother John in 1455 ; and it fell into abeyance on the death, in 1517, of Geoffrey, 11th Baron Scrope of Masham, without male heirs.

John Scrope, 8th Baron Scrope of Bolton was a somewhat reluctant supporter of the Pilgrimage of Grace, a northern uprising in protest at the reforms of Henry VIII but incurred the king's displeasure when he allowed sanctuary to Adam Sedbar, Abbot of Jervaulx who was on the run from the King's Commissioners.

He was the father of Emanuel Scrope, 11th baron ( 1584-1630 ), who was created Earl of Sunderland in 1627 ; on his death without legitimate issue in 1630 the earldom became extinct, and the immense estates of the Scropes of Bolton were divided among his illegitimate children, the chief portion ( including Bolton Castle ) passing by marriage to the Marquess of Winchester, who was created Duke of Bolton in 1689 ; to the Earls Rivers ; and to John Grubham Howe, ancestor of the Earls Howe.

Colonel Scrope was grandson of Adrian Scrope of Wormsley, who was ( approximately ) third son of John Scrope ( d. 1547 ) of Spenninthorne, Yorks, and Hambleden, Bucks, who was the younger son of the 6th Lord Scrope ( c1468-1506 ) by Lady Eliz.

English Captain John Strong, commander of the Welfare, sailed between the two principal islands in 1690 and called the passage " Falkland Channel " ( now Falkland Sound ), after Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland ( 1659 – 1694 ), who as Commissioner of the Admiralty had financed the expedition and later became First Lord of the Admiralty.

Almost immediately his grandfather, Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale, resigned his Lordship of Annandale to Robert's father, possibly to avoid having to swear fealty to John as a vassal lord.

The two leading competitors for the Scottish crown were Robert Bruce, 5th Lord of Annandale ( grandfather of the future King Robert the Bruce ) and John Balliol, Lord of Galloway.

He was the son of John, 5th Baron Balliol, Lord of Barnard Castle, and his wife Dervorguilla of Galloway, daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway and granddaughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon.

Following the death of Margaret in 1290, John Balliol was a competitor for the Scottish crown in the so called ' Great Cause ', as he was a great-great-great-grandson of King David I through his mother ( and therefore one generation further than his main rival Robert Bruce, 5th Lord of Annandale, grandfather of the Robert the Bruce who later became king ), being senior in genealogical primogeniture but not in proximity of blood.

This model was presented to Charles ' son John, later the 5th Earl.

Even as early as the time of St. John Chrysostom ( 5th century ), Constantinople was instrumental in the deposition of multiple bishops outside its traditional jurisdiction.
