* 1865 – American Civil War: Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrenders his army to General William Tecumseh Sherman at the Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina.

The Governor of New South Wales, William Bligh, was deposed by the New South Wales Corps under the command of Major George Johnston, working closely with John Macarthur, on 26 January 1808, 20 years to the day after Arthur Phillip founded European settlement in Australia.

Following Bligh's overthrow Johnston had notified his superior officer, Colonel William Paterson, who was in Tasmania establishing a settlement at Port Dalrymple ( now Launceston ), of events.

Burr was born Raymond William Stacey Burr in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, to William Johnston Burr ( 1889 – 1985 ), an Irish hardware salesman, and his wife Minerva ( née Smith, 1892 – 1974 ), a concert pianist and music teacher, who was of English and Scottish descent.

They always signed their statements with the fictitious name " Captain William Johnston, UVF Chief of Staff ".

Breckinridge went with Davis during the flight from Virginia as the Confederacy collapsed, while also assisting General Joseph E. Johnston in his surrender negotiations with William T. Sherman at Bennett Place.

It was the last official battle of the Civil War between the armies of Major General William T. Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston.

It was organised by William Johnston ( sentenced to a short term in prison the next year for his actions ) and about 30, 000 took part.

Johnston surrendered most of the remaining armies of the Confederacy, including Beauregard and his men, to Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman.

William C. Davis credits Johnston with the majority of the tactical decisions that led to the victory, judging that " Beauregard acted chiefly as a dime novel general, leading the charge of an individual regiment, riding along the line to cheer the troops, accepting the huzzas of the soldiers and complementing them in turn.

He worked with Johnston and William Porcher Miles to create the Confederate Battle Flag.

The two previous surrenders occurred at Appomattox Court House, Virginia between General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant ; and the second and largest at Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina between General William T. Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston.
