In December 1944 SS-Hauptsturmführer Josef Kramer, previously at Auschwitz-Birkenau, became the new camp commander, replacing SS-Hauptsturmführer Adolf Haas, who had been commander since the spring of 1943.

At the trial, the world got its first view of Irma Grese, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Juana Bormann, Fritz Klein, Josef Kramer, and the rest of the SS men and women who before served at Mittelbau Dora, Ravensbrück, Auschwitz I, II, III, and Neuengamme.

Around 200 of them were hanged there including Irma Grese, Josef Kramer and over a dozen of the perpetrators of the Stalag Luft III murders.

Nazis executed under British jurisdiction, including Josef Kramer, Fritz Klein, Irma Grese and Elisabeth Volkenrath, were hanged by Albert Pierrepoint using the variable drop method devised by William Marwood.

Officially called the " Trial of Josef Kramer and 44 others ", the trial began in a Lüneburg courtroom on September 17, 1945 against 45 former SS men, women and kapos ( prisoner functionaries ) from the Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz concentration camps.

From November 1943 until the end of 1944 Fritz Hartjenstein and Josef Kramer were responsible for the extermination camp Auschwitz II, Birkenau, so that Baer was only Commandant of this part of the camp from the end of 1944 until January 1945.

In March she arrived at her last post, Bergen-Belsen, near Celle, where she served under Josef Kramer, Irma Grese and Elisabeth Volkenrath ( all of whom had served with her in Birkenau.

Giles interviewed the camp commandant, Josef Kramer, who turned out to be aware of and an admirer of Giles's work.
