Onycha ( Greek: ονυξ ), along with equal parts of stacte, galbanum, and frankincense, was one of the components of the consecrated Ketoret ( incense ) which appears in the Torah book of Exodus ( Ex. 30: 34-36 ) and was used in the Jerusalem's Solomon's Temple.

An offering was made of the Ketoret on a special incense altar, and was an important component of the Temple service.

Myrrh was an ingredient of Ketoret, the consecrated incense used in the First and Second Temples at Jerusalem, as described in the Hebrew Bible and Talmud.

Frankincense was a part of the Ketoret which is used when referring to the consecrated incense described in the Hebrew Bible and Talmud.

Luxury goods traded along the Incense Route included Indian spices, ebony, silk and fine textiles.

The Incense trade route or the Incense Road of Antiquity ( see also the spice trade ) comprised a network of major ancient land and sea trading routes linking the Mediterranean world with Eastern and Southern sources of incense, spices and other luxury goods, stretching from Mediterranean ports across the Levant and Egypt through eastern Africa and Arabia to India and beyond.

The Incense Route served as a channel for trading of goods such as Arabian frankincense and myrrh ; Indian spices, precious stones, pearls, ebony, silk and fine textiles ; and East African rare woods, feathers, animal skins and gold.

The lost city of Ubar, sometimes identified with Irem in what is now the town of Shisr in Oman, is believed to have been a center of the frankincense trade along the recently rediscovered " Incense Road ".

Incense was also used in the Bible to worship God and symbolize prayer, in both the Old Testament and New Testament ; one of the three Magi offered Christ frankincense, and in the Book of Revelation, angels and saints appear in Heaven offering incense to God, thus setting a precedent for Christian use of incense in worship.

2 Maccabees 2: 4-10, written around 100 BC, says that the prophet Jeremiah, " being warned by God " before the Babylonian invasion, took the Ark, the Tabernacle, and the Altar of Incense, and buried them in a cave on Mount Nebo ( Jordan ), informing those of his followers who wished to find the place that it should remain unknown " until the time that God should gather His people again together, and receive them unto mercy.

After the theophany on Mount Sinai, in the Tabernacle — and afterwards in the Temple — only two altars were used: the Altar of Burnt Offering, and the Altar of Incense.

Inside the first area were three pieces of furniture: a seven-branched oil lampstand on the left ( south ), a table for twelve loaves of show bread on the right ( north ) and the Altar of Incense ( west ), straight ahead before the dividing curtain.

In the center of the Temple of Buddhist Virtue stands the Tower of Buddhist Incense ( Fo Xiang Ge ), which forms the focal point for the buildings on the southern slope of Longevity Hill.

L. W. de Laurence in 1914 published " The Greater Key of Solomon ", directly based on Mathers ' edition, to which he made alterations in an attempt to advertise his mail-order business ( for example by inserting instructions like " after burning one-half teaspoonful of Temple Incense " along with ordering information for the incense ).

Incense can be used at any celebration of the eucharist throughout the year, but especially in the seasons of Christmas, Epiphany and Easter, Maundy Thursday vigil, Palm Sunday, on the feasts of Pentecost, Trinity Sunday, Ascension, Feasts of saints and martyrs, Corpus Christi, and at the Dedication Festival or Patronal Festival of a church.

It was situated on the Incense Route between Syria and Yemen where travelers could replenish their resources of water in the most arid part of Arabia between Mecca and Medina.

Several early St. Denis solos ( including “ Incense ” and ” The Legend of the Peacock ”) were presented on September 29, 2006, at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Avdat (, from, Abdat ), also known as Ovdat and Obodat, was the most important city on the Incense Route after Petra, between the 1st century BCE and the 7th century CE.

It continues to perform, including at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in June 2008, a program consisting of: Ruth St. Denis ' The Incense ; Graham's reconstruction of Ted Shawn's Serenata Morisca ; Graham's Lamentation ; Yuriko's reconstruction of Graham's Panorama, performed by dancers from Skidmore College ; excerpts from Yuriko's and Graham's reconstruction of the latter's Chronicle from the Julien Bryan film ; Graham's Errand into the Maze and Maple Leaf Rag.

Continuous action products include: scented candles and devices which use a candle flame or some other heat source to heat and vaporize a fragrance formulation ; Incense burners ; wall plug-ins which either use piezoelectric technology to aerosolize fragrance or heat to vaporize it ; fragrance impregnated gels which release fragrance as the gel evaporates sometimes with the help of an electric fan ; wick and reed diffusers which release fragrance by evaporation from fragrance-soaked wicks or wooden reeds ; and fragrance impregnated materials like floor wax, paper, plastics, wood which release fragrance by off gassing ; and lastly nebulization systems which convert liquid fragrances into a vapor in a cold process without the use of heat.

Incense paper used for ancestor worship comes in several forms ; each represents a present for the ancestor's spirit.

Incense may be used exactly as at a Solemn Mass with the exception of incensing the celebrant after the Gospel which is not done.

Incense was used by Chinese cultures from Neolithic times and became more widespread in the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties.

Incense spread from there to Greece and Rome.

This was a preference, and ancient trading in incense materials from one area to another comprised a major part of commerce along the Silk Road and other trade routes, one notably called the Incense Route.
