Knuckles the Echidna is a red echidna featured in the video game series Sonic the Hedgehog.

The game is a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and follows on directly from the end of the game, in which Sonic defeated his enemy, Dr. Robotnik ; crash-landing on a floating island, Sonic encounters new character Knuckles the Echidna, and must once more retrieve the Chaos Emeralds while also working to stop Dr. Robotnik from relaunching his ship, the Death Egg.

As Dr. Robotnik begins to repair the damaged ship, he meets up with Knuckles the Echidna, the last surviving member of an ancient civilization of Echidnas that once inhabited the island.

To obtain the Emeralds, he fools their guardian Knuckles the Echidna, convincing him that Sonic and Tails are thieves who want to steal the Emeralds.

In the present day, Knuckles the Echidna is guarding the Master Emerald on the floating Angel Island when Chaos is released from the emerald by Dr. Robotnik.

The Chao raising feature was expanded in Sonic Adventure 2 ; Chao may become " Hero Chao " or " Dark Chao " depending on whether the game's " hero " characters ( Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles " Tails " Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna ) or " dark " characters ( Shadow the Hedgehog, Doctor Ivo Robotnik, and Rouge the Bat ) are nicer to them.

* In the Arabian Nights-themed video game Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sinbad looks almost exactly like Knuckles the Echidna.

It follows the protagonist team of Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles the Echidna, and Miles " Tails " Prower and the antagonist team of Doctor Eggman, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Rouge the Bat and their attempt to work together in order to save the world from destruction.

In zebrafish, the orthologues of the three mammalian hh genes are: shh a, shh b, ( formerly described as tiggywinkle hedgehog named for Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, a character from Beatrix Potter's books for children ), and indian hedgehog b ( formerly described as echidna hedgehog, named for the spiny anteater, though this may have also been a playful reference to Knuckles the Echidna, another character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series of video games ).

However, while Tails is no longer a playable character, the game does introduce Knuckles the Echidna as a playable character.

Referred to in-game as Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the game is largely identical to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with the exception that gameplay is altered due to Knuckles having separate abilities from Sonic or Tails.

Sonic continues to track down Robotnik as he travels through each zone looking for the Chaos Emeralds, once again coming into conflict with Knuckles the Echidna, who believes he is trying to steal them.

( If one downloads Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2, they have the option to play the corresponding Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game.

The group has five members, including Knuckles the Echidna, Mighty the Armadillo ( who previously appeared in the 1993 arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog ), Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee.

The two playable characters in the game are Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna.

The player controls Sonic the Hedgehog, who can unlock Cream the Rabbit and her Chao, Miles " Tails " Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna after defeating Doctor Eggman in specific boss battles.

Spin-off publications from the comic include a Knuckles the Echidna series which ran for 32 issues ; Sonic X, a comic spin-off based on the cartoon of the same name, which lasted 40 issues, and Sonic Universe, a direct spin-off of the expanded universe of the original comic, which is still on-going.

Because of the popularity of the specials and Miniseries featuring Knuckles, in 1997, Knuckles the Echidna became an ongoing series.

The name was derived from the Warehouse Club in Chicago, where resident DJ Frankie Knuckles mixed old disco classics and Eurosynth pop.

Early house producers like Frankie Knuckles created similar compositions from scratch, using samplers, synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines.

To the north, separated from the main body of mountains and plateaus by broad valleys, lies the Knuckles Massif: steep escarpments, deep gorges, and peaks rising to more than 1, 800 meters.

As soon as they arrive, Knuckles ambushes Sonic from underground and knocks the Chaos Emeralds from him, returning him to normal.

In addition, unlike the previous game in the series, Sonic Adventure has six different characters to choose from: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big and E-102 Gamma ; each with their own style of gameplay.

Sonic joins up with his friends Tails and Knuckles, who give him a message from Dr. Eggman stating that he has developed his ultimate weapon of destruction and will take over the world in three days, and Team Sonic is formed and the classic trio heads off to stop Eggman's latest plan.

Bob's favourite character in fantasy campaigns is a dwarf named Knuckles ( ranging from Knuckles, King of the Wall-climbers to Knuckles the Eighth ), who rides a mule named " Little Mike " which he believes to be a " Dwarven Warhorse.

The name House music is said to come from the Chicago dance club, the Warehouse, where the legendary Frankie Knuckles DJed.

During the fight, Knuckles saves Rouge from certain death, and Rouge surrenders her collected shards, finally allowing Knuckles to restore the Master Emerald.

After disabling the various security features guarding the Cannon's core, Sonic and Knuckles encounter the Biolizard, a prototype of the Ultimate Life Form, and Shadow's " biological " brother, who had been awoken from stasis to ensure that the Emeralds would not be tampered with.

Additional characters include familiar characters from previous games, but they must be unlocked in the original Dreamcast version: Amy and Metal Sonic complement Sonic and Shadow, Chao and Dark Chao complement Tails and Eggman, and Tikal and Chaos 0 complement Knuckles and Rouge.

Such eclecticism and the technical wizardy described were highlights of a unique style that separated Hardy from others like Knuckles and Levan.

House music as a genre got its start from the Garage's house DJ Larry Levan and his contemporaries, Frankie Knuckles and Nicky Siano who were both also influential disc jockeys.

Knuckles bought his first drum machine from a young Derrick May who regularly made the trip from Detroit to see Knuckles at the Warehouse, and Ron Hardy at the Music Box.

After the completion of Sonic 2, Yuji Naka made the final decision to only allow the Japanese members in the core development team to work on Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Following the completion of Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Yuji Naka was offered the role of producer at Sega of Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were again developed by Sonic Team in the US, but this time with some of STI's musicians contributing to the score.

The video games Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles contain plotlines centered around the " Death Egg ", a space station resembling the Death Star, though altered to feature the face of series villain Doctor Robotnik.

Knuckles made his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis.

The game is closely tied to its direct sequel Sonic & Knuckles, as the two games were originally one until time constraints and cartridge costs forced the game to be split into two interlocking parts.

Additional emeralds known as Super Emeralds can be obtained if the game is locked on with Sonic & Knuckles, which enable Sonic and Tails to become Hyper Sonic and Super Tails with unique abilities.

Competition Mode is a competitive mode in which two players, playing as either Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, race against each other through five laps on an endless level, unrelated to the levels played in the main game.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles were originally to be released as one game.

However, Sonic & Knuckles contained " Lock-on Technology ", where the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge would be put in the Sega Genesis system, and then another game could be placed onto the top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge itself.
