Puccini completed the score of La rondine, to a libretto by Giuseppe Adami in 1916 after two years of work, and it was premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Monte Carlo on 27 March 1917.

Apart from Massenet, composers whose works had their first performances at Monte Carlo included: Saint-Saëns ( Hélène, 1904 ); Mascagni ( Amica, 1905 ); and Puccini ( La rondine, 1917 ).

Six weeks later, Gheorghiu made her debut at San Francisco Opera receiving favorable reviews for her Magda in that company's new production of La rondine.

Gheorghiu also performed at the Met as Liù in Turandot in 2000 ; as Violetta in La traviata opposite Jonas Kaufmann in 2006 and 2007 ; as Amelia in Simon Boccanegra in 2007 ; as Mimì in La bohème in 2008 ; as Magda in the 2008 / 09 season in the ROH / SFO production of La rondine, the Met's first performance of the opera since 1936 ; and for the 2009 / 10 season she appeared as Violetta, replacing her previous engagement as Marie Antoinette in a rare revival of John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles which was replaced due to the recession.

On December 31, 2008, Gheorghiu premiered the new production of La rondine at the Met, together with Roberto Alagna, Marius Brenciu, Lisette Oropesa and Samuel Ramey.

It's worth noting also that Scotto recorded ( either in studio or in live performance ) the complete Puccini soprano repertoire with the exceptions of Turandot, Magda in La rondine and Minnie in La fanciulla del West.

However, despite the artistic value of the score La rondine has been one of Puccini's less successful works ; " In box office terms, was the poor cousin to the other great hits.

The modern performance history of La rondine in Europe includes the première of the third version at Teatro Regio di Torino ( 1994 ), as well as performances at La Scala ( 1994 ), Leeds Opera North ( 1994, 2001 ), Oper Bonn and Ludwigshaven State Opera House ( 1995 ), Teatro del Giglio in Lucca ( 1998 ), Teatro Filarmonico di Verona ( 2002 ), Kansallisooppera, Helsinki ( 2002, 2003, 2007 ), Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London ( 2002, 2005 ), Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris ( 2005 ), Opéra de Monte-Carlo ( 2007 ), and La Fenice in Venice where it was the opening title of the 2008 season.

Following the premiere of a joint new production by director Nicolas Joël at the Royal Opera House in 2002 ( starring soprano Angela Gheorghiu as Magda ) and at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, La rondine was seen at the Théâtre du Châtelet, revived at the Royal Opera House in 2005, and presented by the San Francisco Opera in 2007, all with Gheorghiu.

Later, with drummer Pete La Roca and pianist Steve Kuhn, Farmer and Swallow recorded the album Sing Me Softly of the Blues ( 1965 ) for the Atlantic label.

A Norwegian movie about the sabotage operation against the heavy water power plant was made in 1948, starring several of the original saboteurs, and titled " Kampen om tungtvannet " ( Norway ), " La Bataille de l ' eau lourde " ( France ) og " Operation Swallow: The Battle for Heavy Water " ( USA ).

Of his Italian works one, La scuola de ' gelosi ( The School for Jealousy ), a witty study of amorous intrigue and emotion, would prove a popular and lasting international success.

Among the most successful of his 37 operas staged during his lifetime were Armida ( 1771 ), La fiera di Venezia ( 1772 ), La scuola de ' gelosi ( 1778 ), Der Rauchfangkehrer ( 1781 ), Les Danaïdes ( 1784 ), which was first presented as a work of Gluck's, La grotta di Trofonio ( 1785 ), Tarare ( 1787 ) ( Tarare was reworked and revised several times as was Les Danaïdes ), Axur, re d ' Ormus ( 1788 ), La cifra ( 1789 ), Palmira, regina di Persia ( 1795 ), Il mondo alla rovescia ( 1795 ), Falstaff ( 1799 ), and Cesare in Farmacusa ( 1800 ).

`` La Gioconda '', like it or not, is a singer's opera.

She has been made the heroine of a tragedy by François Ponsard, Agnès de Méranie, and of an opera by Vincenzo Bellini, La straniera.

A complete opera composed in 1769 ( presumably as a culminating study ) La vestale ( The Vestal Virgin ) has also been lost.

However, in 1778 Gluck turned down an offer to compose the inaugural opera for La Scala in Milan ; upon the suggestion of Joseph II and with the approval of Gluck, Salieri was offered the commission, which he gratefully accepted.

Salieri's Italian tour of 1778 – 80 began with the production of Europa riconosciuta ( Europa Recognized ) for La Scala ( which was revived in 2004 for the same opera house's re-opening following extensive renovations ).

In 1783 the Italian opera company was revived with singers partly chosen and vetted by Salieri during his Italian tour, the new season would open with a slightly re-worked version of Salieri's recent success La scuola de ' gelosi.

) Salieri soon produced one of his greatest works with the text by Casti La grotta di Trofonio ( The Cave of Trofonius ) in 1785, the first opera buffa published in full score by Artaria.

In 2004, the opera Europa riconosciuta was staged in Milan for the reopening of La Scala in Milan, with soprano Diana Damrau in the title role.

From about 1697 onwards ( La caduta del Decemviri ), influenced partly perhaps by the style of Giovanni Bononcini and probably more by the taste of the viceregal court, his opera arias become more conventional and commonplace in rhythm, while his scoring is hasty and crude, yet not without brilliance ( L ' Eraclea, 1700 ), the oboes and trumpets being frequently used, and the violins often playing in unison.

Charles played the emotionally disturbed and violent prisoner, Eugene Buffy, in the high successful Lynda La Plante drama series The Governor ( 1995 ); the title role in the Channel 4 pirate sitcom Captain Butler ( 1997 ); the warden of a women's prison in the Canadian sci-fi fantasy Lexx ( 2001 ); Detective Chief Inspector Mercer in 7 episodes of the BBC soap opera Doctors ( 2003 ); and soccer agent, Joel Brooks, in the Sky TV football soap Dream Team ( 2004-5 ).

The following is the process that was used when rescuing frescos in La Fenice, a Venetian opera house, but it is the same process for similarly damaged frescoes.

Through the friendly interposition of the Marquis Cavalli, his first opera, La cambiale di matrimonio ( The Marriage Contract ), was produced at Venice when he was a youth of 18 years.

The opera La Cenerentola was as successful as Barbiere.

His works are frequently performed in opera houses throughout the world and, transcending the boundaries of the genre, some of his themes have long since taken root in popular culture – such as " La donna è mobile " from Rigoletto, " Va, pensiero " ( The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves ) from Nabucco, " Libiamo ne ' lieti calici " ( The Drinking Song ) from La traviata and the " Grand March " from Aida.

The production by Milan's La Scala of his first opera, Oberto in November 1839 achieved a degree of success, after which Bartolomeo Merelli, La Scala's impresario, offered Verdi a contract for three more works.

Its mixture of political satire and grand opera parody mimicked Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld and La belle Hélène, which ( in translation ) then dominated the English musical stage.

Not long afterwards, Richard D ' Oyly Carte was managing the Royalty Theatre, and he needed a short opera to be played as an afterpiece to Offenbach's La Périchole.

With Sullivan's brother, Fred, as the Learned Judge, the opera was a runaway hit, outlasting the run of La Périchole.
