In the last decades of the 20th century, tourism also contributed to the local economy, helped by attractions that include the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, and Anthony Lakes Ski Area.

Lakes at two of the county's chief recreation areas, the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds and Pyramid State Recreation Area, were formed this way.

It is commonly referred to as the Twin Lakes Area because it is bordered by two of Arkansas ' largest lakes, Bull Shoals Lake and Norfork Lake.

Visitors can take State Route 203 from the town of Mammoth Lakes to the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, over Minaret Summit, then down to Devils Postpile National Monument, with access to the Ansel Adams Wilderness.

McCall's Little Ski Hill, formerly the " Payette Lakes Ski Area ," is a few miles west of town on Highway 55, just over the county line in Adams County.

Some of these quarries are already exhausted, and have been allowed to fill with water, forming an area known as the Vulcan Lakes now known at Three Oaks Recreation Area.

Murray is situated west of the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area, which offers hiking, elk and bison viewing, birding, 1850s historic buildings, planetarium, nature center, off-highway vehicle riding, fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and a large wildlife population.

A portion of the road is connected with US 68, most notably through the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area.

It is part of the Belgrade Lakes resort area, and is included in the Augusta, Maine micropolitan New England City and Town Area.

The old 1931 school building houses the renovated 837-seat Historic Holmes Theatre featuring orchestra and balcony level seating, conference rooms, and the Lakes Area Learning Center and Alternative High School.
