There are cups claimed to be the Grail in several churches, for instance the Saint Mary of Valencia Cathedral, which contains an artifact, the Holy Chalice, supposedly taken by Saint Peter to Rome in the 1st century, and then to Huesca in Spain by Saint Lawrence in the 3rd century.

Severn was also instrumental in helping to found the British Academy of the Fine Arts in Rome, which drew the support of such influential figures as the Duke of Devonshire, John Flaxman and Sir Thomas Lawrence.

Lawrence of Rome, his best-known deacon, suffered martyrdom on 10 August, 3 days after his bishop, as Sixtus had prophesied.

Together with the minor basilica of St Lawrence outside the Walls, they were associated with the five ancient patriarchal sees of Christendom ( see Pentarchy ): St John Lateran was associated with Rome, St Peter's with Constantinople ( present-day Istanbul ), St Paul's with Alexandria ( in Egypt ), St Mary Major with Antioch ( the Levant ) and St Lawrence with Jerusalem.

According to this reading, Egypt is viewed as destructive and vulgar ; the critic Paul Lawrence Rose writes: “ Shakespeare clearly envisages Egypt as a political hell for the subject, where natural rights count for nothing .” Through the lens of such a reading, the ascendancy of Rome over Egypt does not speak to the practice of empire-building as much as it suggests the inevitable advantage of reason over sensuality.

More recently it was used as the backdrop for the Caroline Lawrence novels the Assassins of Rome and the Enemies of Jupiter.

This significant river was named by French explorers in the 1700s to commemorate the martyred Christian Lawrence of Rome.

Lawrence of Rome (, " laurelled "; c. 225 – 258 ) was one of the seven deacons of ancient Rome serving under Sixtus II who were martyred during the persecution of Valerian in 258.

After the death of Sixtus, the prefect of Rome demanded that Lawrence turn over the riches of the Church.

He is fired by the network in the first episode of series 2, although he is never shown on screen in that episode ; the real reason for this is that Lawrence died of lung cancer between the filming of series 1 and series 2, forcing the writers to create a new executive producer character, Sam ( see below ).
