The revolution in jazz that took place around 1949, the evolution from the `` bebop '' school of Dizzy Gillespie to the `` cool '' sound of Miles Davis and Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz, and the whole legend of Charlie Parker, had made an impression on many academic and literary men.

The nonet was active until the end of 1949, along the way undergoing several changes in personnel: Roach and Davis were constantly featured, along with Mulligan, tuba player Bill Barber, and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, who had been preferred to Sonny Stitt ( whose playing was considered too bop-oriented ).

Perhaps the earliest free recordings in jazz are two pieces recorded under the leadership of jazz pianist Lennie Tristano: " Intuition " and " Digression ", both recorded in 1949 with a sextet including saxophone players Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh.

In New York, pianist Lennie Tristano and saxophonist Lee Konitz developed a " somewhat atonal cerebral alternative to bop which concentrated on linear improvisation and interweaving rhythmic complexities ".

The band initially consisted of Davis on trumpet, Mulligan on baritone saxophone, trombonist Mike Zwerin, alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, Junior Collins on French horn, tubist Bill Barber, pianist John Lewis, bassist Al McKibbon and drummer Max Roach.

This quartet structure remained the core of Mulligan's groups throughout the rest of the 1950s with sporadic personnel changes and expansions of the group with trumpeters Jon Eardley and Art Farmer, saxophonists Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Lee Konitz, and vocalist Annie Ross.

Kathie Lee Gifford ( born 16 August 1953 ) is an American television host, singer, songwriter and actress, best known for her 15-year run ( 1985 – 2000 ) on the talk show Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, which she co-hosted with Regis Philbin.

The program went into national broadcast in 1988 as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, and Gifford became well-known across the country.
