Although not mentioned in the film itself, all of the licensed support material and merchandising for the film make this reference, including Hasbro's 501st Legion action figures, the DK Publishing Star Wars Visual Dictionary books, and the Star Wars: Battlefront II game ( the story-driven campaign mode of Battlefront II even expanded the role of the 501st Legion to the main fighting force in almost every battle in the " Clone Wars " and " Galactic Civil War " eras of Star Wars, from the Battle of Geonosis to the Battle of Hoth ).

Following the downfall of Czechoslovakia and occupation of its Czech part by Nazi Germany in 1939, Czechoslovak units and formations served with the Polish Army ( Czechoslovak Legion ), the French Army, the Royal Air Force, the British Army ( the 1st Czechoslovak Armoured Brigade ), and the Red Army ( I Corps ).

In World War I, the Foreign Legion fought in many critical battles on the Western Front, including Artois, Champagne, Somme, Aisne, and Verdun ( in 1917 ), and also suffered heavy casualties during 1918.

During the First Indochina War ( 1946 – 54 ), the Foreign Legion saw its numbers swell due to the incorporation of Second World War veterans who couldn't adapt to civilian life.

Constantly on call throughout the country, heavily engaged in fighting against the National Liberation Front and the Armée de Libération Nationale ( ALN ), the Foreign Legion was brought to the brink of extinction after some officers, men and the highly-decorated 1st Foreign Parachute Regiment took part in the Generals ' putsch.

By 1962 the morale of the Foreign Legion was at an all-time low ; it had lost its traditional and spiritual home ( Algeria ), elite units had been disbanded, and in addition, many officers and men were arrested or deserted to escape prosecution.

Some notable operations include: the Chadian – Libyan conflict in 1969 – 72 ( the first time that the Foreign Legion was sent in operations after the Algerian War ), 1978 – 79, and 1983 – 87 ; Kolwezi in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 1978 ; Rwanda in 1990 – 94 ; and the Côte d ' Ivoire ( the Ivory Coast ) in 2002 to the present.

Caracalla's maternal aunt, Julia Maesa, successfully instigated a revolt among the Third Legion to have her eldest grandson ( and Caracalla's cousin ), Elagabalus, declared emperor in his place.

After his Legion series ended its run in Adventure Comics, Shooter retired from the comic book industry, as he concurrently graduated from high school and the Legion of Super-Heroes stories were relegated to a small back-up feature in Action Comics in the late 1960s.

He co-wrote the script for Nacho Cerdà's feature debut The Abandoned ( 2006 ) and delivered the screenplay for Cerdà's upcoming comic book adaptation I Am Legion ( 2012 ).

Superboy continued to appear in the comic in reprinted stories and as a member of the Legion until the Legion's final issue, Adventure Comics No. 380 ( May 1969 ).

After the Legion pushed new Superboy stories out of Adventure Comics in 1963, Superboy became the only comic book to feature original Superboy stories.
