* Reccared succeeds his father Leovigild as king of the Visigoths.

Hermenegild was the son of King Leovigild and brother to Reccared.

In the second year of his reign, king Leovigild I declared his brother Liuvigild co-king, assigning him Hispania Citerior, or the eastern part of Hispania, to directly rule over.

Liuva granted Iberia to his son Leovigild and took Septimania to himself.

However, when it came time to expel the Byzantines, Witteric instead led his troops against king Liuva II ( Spring 603 ), counting on the support of a faction of nobles in opposition to the dynasty of Leovigild.

* April 21 – Leovigild, king of the Visigoths

Saint Hermenegild or Ermengild ( d. April 13, 586 ) (, from Gothic Ermen Gild, " immense tribute "), was the son of king Leovigild of Visigothic Spain.

Later the Visigoth king Leovigild captured the city.

In 554, Granada and southernmost Hispania Baetica were taken from the Byzantines ; under the last Arian king, Leovigild, the Suevi kingdom was annexed in 585 and the war of reconquest against the remainder of the Byzantine territories was begun, finally being completed under King Suintila in 624.

Invading the royal palace, and deposing the young king, he counted on the support of a faction of nobles in opposition to the dynasty of Leovigild.

* The Suebi kingdom on the Iberian peninsula is conquered by the Visigoths under King Leovigild.

The station of the legion in the territory of the Astures grew into an important city, which resisted the attacks of the Visigoths till AD 586, when it was taken by Leovigild ; and it was one of the few cities which the Visigoths allowed to retain their fortifications.

And with Amalaric's death in 531, the Visigothic kingdom entered an extended period of unrest which lasted until Leovigild assumed the throne in 568.

The Visigothic Kingdom shifted its capital to Toledo and reached a high point during the reign of Leovigild.

In 585 the whole settlement together with the rest of Suebi Kingdom was annexed by Leovigild into the Visigothic kingdom of Spain as the sixth province of the realm.

In the Visigothic kingdom, which became centred on Toledo by the end of the reign of Leovigild, the province of Gallia Narbonensis, usually shortened to just Gallia or Narbonensis and never called Septimania, was both an administrative province of the central royal government and an ecclesiastical province whose metropolitan was the Archbishop of Narbonne.

During the revolt of Hermenegild ( 583 – 585 ) against his father Leovigild, Septimania was invaded by Guntram, King of Burgundy, possible in support of Hermenegild's revolt, since the latter was married to his niece Ingundis.

Maurila, an Arian bishop established in Palencia by Leovigild, followed King Reccared's conversion to Catholicism ( 587 ), and in 589 he assisted at the Third Council of Toledo. Reccopolis in the province of Guadalajara is one: the others were Victoriacum, founded by Leovigild, which may survive as the city of Vitoria, though a 12th-century ( re ) foundation for this city is given in contemporary sources ; Lugo id est Luceo in the Asturias, referred to by Isidore of Seville, and Ologicus ( perhaps Ologitis ), founded using Basque labour in 621 by Suinthila as a fortification against the Basques, modern Olite.

As a result, he led a revolt against Leovigild.

Leovigild would not violate the sanctuary, but sent Reccared instead inside to speak with Hermenegild and to offer peace.

King Leovigild ordered him to be killed, and the axemen found him to be resigned to this end.

Four come from sees within the former kingdom of the Suevi, probably showing that Leovigild, after his conquest, had displaced the Catholic bishops by Arians.

Indeed, John wrote that, in 578, " Leovigild had peace to reside with his own people.

John does imply that Arians received favorable treatment under Leovigild, once, in connection with the Arian council convened by Leovigild in 580, where Catholic bishops were ignored.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire the whole Iberian Peninsula, including Ferrol, was raided by the Vandals and incorporated in 411 to the Suebic Kingdom of Galicia ; their kingdom was incorporated in 584 by Leovigild to the Visigothic Kingdom.

His nephew Prince Charles Edward, Duke of Albany succeeds him, because his brother Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and nephew Prince Arthur of Connaught had renounced their rights.
