At first, Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll, was set to fill the power vacuum and enforce royal authority, but he met with limited success in a struggle with his brother-in-law, Torquil MacLeod of Lewis.

In September 1507, Torquil MacLeod was besieged at Stornoway Castle on Lewis.

This still happens, in some communities where a surname is particularly common, for example on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, many residents have the family name MacLeod ( son of Lewis ) and so may still be known by a surname symbolising their occupation such as ' Kevin the post ' and ' Kevin Handbag '

It is known that the island was ruled by the MacLeods from 1518 when Calum Garbh, younger son of the MacLeod Chief of Lewis was granted title.

The award winning voice over artist and actor Lewis MacLeod lived in south Bishopbriggs and attended Auchinairn primary, and the Oscar-winning director and actor Peter Capaldi attended St Matthew's Primary school.

As such, new cast members Lewis MacLeod, Kate O ' Sullivan and Enn Reitel were drafted in to take over.

Singer Re Styles ( born Shirley Marie MacLeod ) ( vocals ) and ex-Santana percussionist Mingo Lewis were also fixtures for much of the band's early history.

One such pirate chief is said to have been Calum Garbh MacLeod, son of a chief of Clan Macleod of Lewis who based himself at Brochel Castle on Raasay in 1518 and used Rona as raiding base.

Leod ( Scottish Gaelic: Leòd ; Old Norse: Ljótr ) ( c. 1200 – 1280 ) is considered the eponymous ancestor and founder of Clan MacLeod and Clan MacLeod of Lewis.

There are two recognised Scottish clans with the surname: Clan MacLeod, and Clan MacLeod of Lewis.

On Lewis, the chiefs of the Morrison clan ( earlier, Clann mhic Amhlaigh ( Macaulays ) of Uig in Lewis, and Sliochd a ' Bhreitheimh, later Morrison ) continued to hold office as hereditary brieves ( Scots for bretheamh or brehon ) or judges of the MacLeod clan of Lewis into the seventeenth century.

Significant numbers of men from Clan Elphinstone, Clan Forbes, Clan Keith, Clan MacIntyre, Clan MacKenzie, Clan MacLean, Clan MacLeod of MacLeod, Clan MacLeod of Lewis, Clan MacTavish, Clan MacMillan, Clan Maxwell, Clan Ramsay, Clan Wemyss and a few members of the Clan Innes also joined the Jacobite army.

There are two old carved commemorative slabs on the walls of the larger building: one depicts a warrior and is believed to be Roderick, 7th Chief ; while the other is for Margaret, daughter of Roderick MacLeod of Lewis, who died in 1503.

Similarly, the garbled Bannatyne Manuscript indicates that the MacNeacails held Lewis from the Kings of Mann, and that the clan's possession of the island terminated though the marriage of an heiress to a MacLeod.

Lewis Henry Morgan ( 1818 – 1881 ), a lawyer from Rochester, New York, became an advocate for and ethnological scholar of the Iroquois.
